Ok So I was talking to a big Muskie fisherman from my parts in the tri state area Ohio WV and PA...He has fished them for years and is very successful at one of the main lakes I like to fish...He has cabin on the lake has offered to guide me free of charge to help me out very grateful for this...He has told me numerous times to but the big lures away and that the fish just dont respond to the big baits at this lake like you read about everywhere else...He swears to use small cranks and rapalas that are 1.5inches to maybe 2 inches...He is giving me a few Old Bagley (grateful to say least) lures he swears buy....says they feed on small gizzard shad all winter and this makes since match your bait size to forage....ok all is good but then I ask how you throw these tiny lures on Musky gear??

He says he uses 20lb big game mono at most and has landed numerous fish 48 inches plus like this with mo problem. He says you want mono because then you have stretch so the lips dont bust off these?? any thoughts on this? I cant see stringing a beast with 20lb mono and I def cant see using smaller gear for these beasts?? He telling me he does this especailly trolling then he has close to 10ft of stretch seems you could lose fish lot easier this way??

^^^^^^^ He sounds like a very good fisherman......you may learn something!^^^^^^^

Complete opposite in the line...stretched line holds the fish, helps with constant preasure! And yes, keeps the lexan lip from blowing out....smart man!

I assume your trolling? Not sure how you would cast a lure that small with anything but a spinning reel usimg 20lb mono. Lures that small you need as much give as possible. Mono is a good choice if you are using line counters and trolling rods. You could use braid with a light action rod and flouro leader tied to the braid and to the bait.

I would buy a $30 Shimano TDR, throw a cheap reel on it for this application. My dad used 20lb mono for a long time, back in the day. The stuff is really tough.

But by all means I would go see what this guy is all about.

I've never used braid for short line trolling. 20lb test is what I've used for 30yrs. As for baits 3 to 5 in are my go to baits. For years a 1/4 oz. Hot and Tot was a killer bait. Never been broken off trolling. I've taken several 50 in. plus fish with this set up with no issues. Some baits run better on mono then braid. The stretch helps them track properly so they won't "blow out". I fish the same areas as your friend. Fish don't break lines fisher men do. Don't argue with success. I'd listen, learn and try it!!

what he is doing and says is working fine for him and may work fine for you too but I see no reason why you cant take off from his lead and change it up some. I too have used 20 lb mono in the past and mainly for trolling but I see no reason why you coulnt incorporate alot of the newer smaller shad style musky baits along with being able to use superbraid and heavier rod/reels "terminal tackle" and catch those same fish he is and maybe even more!

You will find out that not all lures will work on braid short line trolling. Some require the stretch of mono to track properly. I'm talking about smaller Muskie size Shad baits. There is a use for both lines but not every lure runs the same on both.

This is exactly his point...He is running Bagley 5inch super shad from the old days...gave me bunch I put in other thread...I was thinking maybe try using the braid but go to a Floro leader that is maybe 50lb test give or take and get it long like 36 inch to provide some stretch any thoughts?? Could make Long leader out of heavier Mono too I supose...just figure 20lb mono pretty thick so Figured maybe I can get away with one of these two actions..

You guys that have run 20lb or so mono trolling. What do you use for a leader with this? I can see this playing a role also. Thanks

Mono is great for trolling. I use it all the time. I usually use 40lb Big Game but have used 30lb as well. Mono works great with planer board clips as well.

According to the musky guru Otto Von Bismarck "a fool learns from his mistakes, but a truly wise man learns from the mistakes of others" or something like that. He also said"small lures catch lots of bonus fish of other species". Sounds like quite an opportunity for you both. Enjoy.
