Is there a time when you would use one over the other or is it a personal preference?

personal preference and size you're looking to throw... I throw more sq phantoms than hellhounds but I have a squirrely 8" hellhound that has been a go to lure at times... they all work, to me it comes down to which one you have more confidence in...

I personally like hellhounds in warmer water becouse they turn faster once i twitch them. I can give them three or four pops in a quick succession then let it pause. In warmer water when faster retrieves seem to work best i think this is a important factor to consider. All in all i think if they are going to eat a glide bait, they are going to eat a glide bait but it cant hurt to think about it.

I like the action of the hellhound better.

the squirly runs shallow like the regular size. The puppy runs a little deeper. The squirly has a little more hang time and is less erratic. I normal grab a puppy in early spring and a reg size or a squirly as weeds get tall

You can run a Hellhound side-to-side 4-5 feet if you want. For me, it's a "get their attention" lure.
