Finally had some nice weather, so I tried throwing some musky baits on my new Tranx 500/Big Nasty combo, and initially I was backlashing often with lighter, chunky lures like blades. When I popped out 5/6 brakes, tightened up the spool tension to the point where the lure was falling slowly, and stopped whipping the baits hard, the problem went away. My casting distance was still pretty good, but it seems strange that I need to keep the reel that tight.

Is it normal to have to keep a Tranx tight and cast gently? I have a bunch of other baitcasters for musky and bass, and I typically have 1-2 brakes out and minimal spool tension.

All reels are a little diffrent. Once tuned right it's Goin to be a sweet rig.
I have 3 Toro 60s that have diffrent brake setting and tention. Diffrent rods for diffrent lures.

I use 3 of 6 brakes, and the tension knob to where it just barely touches the spool, on all my reels the rest is feeling and control with the thumb, and i like it that way, but some of my buddies cant cast my set ups without tightening the tension knob a bit.

As you get more and more practice with the setup, you can back of the tension knob and still keep everything under control.

I use 4-5 on a tranx and zero spool tension. The only "tension" I use is to limit the endplay of the spool to zero. I cast as far or further than the guys I fish with. The low spool tension will also save the bearings and shim plates in the tension cap.

On most Tranx reels it's best to run all 6 brakes on !!!!
And keep the cast control knob loose
Also very important, at the end of the day casting
,on the way back to the dock take off your bait and let out all your line behind the boat running st Speed then rewind Line tight on the spool.
Also Do Not Over Fill the SPOOL that will cause the line to rub the frame and cause backlashes.
