Posts: 958 | I bought 2 to try as client reels a few years ago. One lasted a day the other less than I week. I returned them and got 400B's instead and they have been very good. He would be better off buying a 5500 or 6500 Abu also than a Cardiff in my opinion. Jeff Hanson madisonmuskyguide.com

Posts: 1425 Location: St. Lawrence River | Revo Toro S or Daiwa Lexa. That's as inexpensive as I personally would go, even for a starter. Your buddy will enjoy the sport so much more and likely stick with it, with some decent stuff to use.

Jeff Hanson madisonmuskyguide.com What failed on the reels? I've been using a couple cardiffs for several years without problems.

Posts: 8814 | I've got an older style Cardiff 301 that I used as my only reel for a couple seasons when I was first starting out. I did everything you could imagine while learning how to cast - stopping the bait with the reel, backlashes, trying to reel stuff that's way too big/etc. I've broken a bunch of reels since then, all much more expensive. The Cardfiff is still going...
