Posts: 95 Location: MN | Let's condense some of the information already posted here a bunch of times. I'd like to get a single post with all the top 3 options you'd recommend (not necessarily in any order) in each of the following choices, so that newer people to muskie fishing have newer information and it's easier to find. That could mean brand, size, color, etc. They can always search more for the debates about the why's of each, so let's keep it at a list for simplicity's sake. Doesn't have to be based on pricing either, but if you want to do a high budget, low budget and middle of the road budget option, go right ahead. Interpret this as you see fit! ![]() TOOLS: 1. Posts: 770 | I think the biggest problem new musky anglers run into is they think they need to buy all of ^^^^ That. My advice to a new angler would be to get two rods one for heavy stuff one for light stuff. I like bulldawg rods, they are reasonable and get the job done. Abu garcia 6500 C3s are great reels for the $ not the best for big blades but they do well for everyrhing else. Spool them with 80# power pro. As for lures break everything into natural colors and bright colors, buy one of each for each catagory. Topwater giant jackpot and top raider. 2 suicks, 2 gliders i like squirkos, as for bucktails i would say your going to want one black one yellow, one white, one orange, one firetiger, one brown. Rapala super shad cranks and X- jointed shad are good options. Spend more time fishing and less time worrying about buying new stuff.

Posts: 983 | ^^^I agree with this,,spend money on rod and reel and dont get sucked into the lure hype...all it willl do is run you broke and not get you more fish...Totally agree get basics and spend time fishing plus if you have 100 lures to use u think you need to try them all when I think you better off only having couple of each type and concentrate on learning to fish them correctly and when and where to use them!!!

Posts: 670 Location: mercer wi | If I were to take a new person to the store to get totally set up for musky fishing and they had their own boat. Net, mojo 8'6" h rod, Abu Toro s60, 80# line, 130# floor with bb swivel Topwater- pacemaker any color, jackpot any color Bucktail- mepps double marabou black/orange, and black/silver Slither mamba firetiger Crank- 8" slammer perch, depth raider sucker Rubber- mag dawn or Medusa walleye walleye walleye Jerk/glider- 10"hi suick black, 10" manta orange bandit Tools, you can get some at hardware store too, split ring pliers, long handle pliers, jaw spreaders, HOOK CUTTERS, good pair of scissors. Tool box to put them in. EXtra hooks and leader. A lot of the stuff you can find on here used. Fish don't care if it's used. I hope this helps good luck

Posts: 64 | I'll give me $0.02. I agree with the other posts above that say to avoid spending tons of cash on every bait you can get your hands on. Start with a couple of bucktails, cranks, jerks, topwaters, and rubber. Then, once you find out what you like to use, and what works on your body of water, you can invest more if you choose. Here's my list. Tools - good hook cutters, Knipex mini bolt cutters are highly recommended - long handled needle nose pliers, any brand is fine - any tangle free basket (that is musky sized) will work. Frabill conservation series are great, but Scotty or Lucky Strike make some nets that work well Rods: 2 or 3 rods is all you'll ever need. I use 3, a St Croix mojo in 7'6'' for topwater and jerkbaits, a 9' XH telescopic Tackle Industries for 8's, 10's, cranks, and plastics up to about 6 oz. Lastly I use a 9' XXH telescopic Tackle Industries rod for big rubber up to 14 oz, double 10's, and big cranks. If you started out with a TI XH and XXH rod you'd be able to throw almost everything lure out there with ease. Reels: You could buy a Abu Garcia Revo Toro S 60 and be done. That reel is probably the best all around reel out there. At 29'' ipt you can bring in 10's, burn 8's, rip rubber, etc all with ease. If you want to spend a bit more money, go for a Toro Beast 60. Just put a high speed one (34" ipt) on my XXH rod and love it for ripping rubber. Line: Sufix 832 80lb in camo or moss green Leader: Tyrant 130lb fluro 12'' and 18'' Lure: Topwater: Big Mama original WTD, and a Big Mama twisted sis'tr. Everyone is crazy over the Lake X stuff, but Big Mama's are amazing lures too Bucktail: Tackle Industries Double 8 and 10 dominatrix, Spanky fireballs. Any color you want, I agree with natural and bright colors, use a couple of each. Crank: 8'' and 10'' jakes are all you need. Can cast or troll them any time of the year. Believers, and Bucher shallow/depth raiders are all great as well Jerk: Suick, 9'' high impact, weighted Rubber: Tackle Industries 8 oz mag super D, or 12oz mega super D. Husky sized medussas are great for fall, or regular sized for summer works great If I could only use 3 lures forever: TI double 10 dominatrix in muddy gold color, Big Mama twisted sis'tr in charged cisco, and a TI mag super D in any walleye color. Ok a 4th, would be the 9'' suick. You could easily just use 2 of everything. 2 rods, 2 reels, 2 topwaters, tails, rubbers, cranks, jerks. You could pretty much cover everything this way.

Posts: 95 Location: MN | I should have clarified this post; only wanted it to read as a list of good options to choose from. Didn't intend it to be something where you had to have all of these. More like if I need a good topwater and a good rubber bait, what are good options? They could be found here quickly. Same for the question of a good reel or rod. Find it here quick and be done searching. My bad, should have done a better job.
