With all the negatives about the Chip I was wondering exactly what were the top producing legit 50lber lakes in the 40's. Anyone know? Any?

What negatives? It ain't about the Chip, it's about the promotion thereof.

It's a great body of water with an excellent muskie population and puts out occasional 50s. No one is saying it's a bad place to fish, and the crappie fishing rocks, as was mentioned. Largemouth Bass too, lately.

There's some pretty impressive legend fish from Enterprise Lake and Post Lake over here. One was speared, and the other...was speared. Both were somewhere in the 50 pound range, maybe a bit more.

Gabby Ball showed me a picture in 1974 or so of one speared there in the late forties, I think; that was pretty crazy. Darned big fish.

Just wondering about lakes in the 1940s Era that put out 50lbers. Legit ones. Thought it would be kinda fun to know.

The chip also has great walleye, bass, pike and panfish fishing. Some nice ones too. It is also a beautiful body of water with great places to stay. A great place to take a family. My kids caught many of their first fish species there. It does not produce muskies over 60lbs.

i wish i had a picture of the channel cat i caught walleye fishing out there about 10 years ago.. it was about 15 lbs! 4 lb test on an ultra light. i thought for sure i had the new world record walleye on. took 20 minutes to get it to the surface before we saw it. love fishing the chip!

Banana Lake x2

Some might need explanation. "Banana Lake" was the Lake X of Manitowish Waters area guide Dick Sleight, so named because "it's shaped like a banana, but different" and he and his clients boated lots of 40lb fish from there (and other waters too, he was one of the top guides of his era).

I'm accepting bids for the identification of the "real" banana lake. LOL And yes, I do know...

Actually, Jerry got it wrong on the first one...that one weighed 52 pounds 8 1/2oz and was caught by Rita Hillenbrand from the Flambeau Flowage where only women have ever caught muskies over 50 pounds!

The second one weighed 47 pounds and did come from Banana Lake!

Dick would fry 2# of bacon then fry the musky in the bacon grease. Delicious. Banana lake is a private lake. No public access. Deep in the woods of northern wi. You should see the walleyes too.

I would love to see the sleight dead sucker jerkbait rig. They basically turned a dead sucker into a glidebait. During the PBS special narrated by randy travis done on the sleights quite awhile ago, they hid the rig from cameras.
