Subject: Trolling Weight Question

Hey guys, I am going to be trying some trolling again this fall after not really doing it for the past 9-10 years (getting old and achy in the cold of late season lol). While doing some research, I have noticed guys have been using inline weights to get their baits down quicker behind planer boards. I was just wondering if anyone has a general idea about how much 1oz, 2oz, 3oz weights will affect running depth. Most of my favorite baits run about 8 ft down with 60 feet of line out. How would the weights affect the amount of line I would set to achieve the same depths? Also, can I get shallow running baits deeper with weights, like a 6" Jake that typically runs about 5 feet with 60 feet out? Your input is appreciated!!

You sure can, the weight also helps collect weeds and debri that slide down your line. Bigger weights for bigger baits, I always liked using 4-6oz when trolling. Then I gave up trolling.

I think it depends on how deep you want to get them down. Like was already said, many guys use them to collect weeds mostly. But on smaller bait I think 0.75-2 ounce is a good range to start with.

Check out the Off Shore Tackle Tadpoles . We are using them, and they really work great. Sort of a dipsy diver for trolling boards. The Tadpole helps get the lure to the depth you want with a shorter lead between the bait and board or straight line.

I am not real familiar with the tadpoles, But looking at that, there is 3 different connections. One connection to line, one to leader, and one to attach lure. 3 connections , for me, adds more chances for failure.

Guess, I would only attach a weight to my line or ball bearing swivel via a split ring in front of the leader.

Steve mentioned it was similar to a dipsey diver so there are are only two connections, one to the lure and one to the main line. When it's diving the snap on the triangle side slides up to the top and when a fish hits it slides to the nose and rises in the water column. Just ordered one, the dive curve shown on the site was what got me to buy.

I ordered some wing it snap weights for trolling walleye cranks, might be worth checking out. Also, there are various trolling weight charts out there that can give you an idea on line out vs depth for weight

we here. a rule of thumb. leaders should be 5ft. shorter leads are stiffer and kill bait action.. inline weights vary, depending, boat rods?. planer boards?.,and spedd over ground. even bait placement running big boards ,depth of same baits differ.

Weights help keep erratic and slightly out of tune baits down but not from kicking out. How much depends on the lure and depth.

King Salmon are a common target for the off Shore tackle anglers. Absolutely no issues catching big Kings, so...

We've used these for a couple years, Jim. They work, zero issues.

Thanks guys, some good thoughts there! I guess I was just wondering how much a specific weight would affect running depth in general terms but woodieb8 made some points I never considered. I will go out and do the homework and report back.

I have another question in regards to planer board trolling. What size releases should a person start out with?

We use ball weights to catch weeds, not a pyramid. Set up similar to this illustration. Line type is up to you, as I didn't make this picture up.

I prefer to hook the leader to the top welded ring on the main line swivel, not the bottom ring as shown. Doing so, hangs the ball lower to catch weeds.

I learned to do the same (almost), but with two welded ring swivels connected by a #7 split ring instead of a snap as shown above. Hang a cannonball sinker from the split ring using a snap. The extra swivel adds more freedom from line-twisting.

I prefer to hang the weight on the front ring of the swivel (the line side), not the back ring (leader side).
If you hang the weight on the leader side or (as pictured above) snap a leader to a line-side ring you prevent the swivel from swivelling! If the leader can't spin it can create problems if your lure spins or rolls. This may not be a big deal with a true-running crankbait, but ones that wander alot roll over more than you'd think, and especially important with bucktails.

Steve,
Do you have any idea how deep various lures go with these?
would they work to troll double 10's or get a shallow diving crankbait to go deeper?
thanks,

Depends on how much line you let out, and yes!
