I am looking for a higher speed reel this year for double 8's, rubber and the occasional double 10 use. I already have one of nearly everything, 2 abu toros, 2 daiwa's, and a tranx pg. Looking for a lighter weight high speed reel that can handle all of the above to pair with a big nasty. The 400 tranx causes me to rethink. I know it is too early for comparisons, but with the huge main gear of the okuma, is it capable of tens on occasion? really looking for any comments for experience with this reel. Another question around the tranx. The 300 and 400 have the same inches per turn. Given that none of us will ever be spooled by a musky, why would you buy the 400 size? IPT must be at a full spool level, not at the end of the cast. Just curious what this will mean in the real world.

I can only speak to the Rocket as I have one and do love it. I use it for burning 8's and I also use it a lot when I want to speed up topwater. For me, 10's would be tough. But if you have popeye arms I'm sure it could work.

Unless you are using a tranx 500, pulling double 8s and 10s on any high speed reel is going cause a lot of wear and tear on your body. For pulling and burning the big blades the 500 pg tranx is used because of the power it has. Not to mention how much line it picks up per turn. The lower speed gear ratio on the tranx 500 pg still picks up just as much line as a high speed model of a different reel. That's what makes burning blades with it so easy. So to try to answer your question, I would not go with the rocket unless you are going to burn smaller bucktails only. The rocket with double 10s will kill you. It's not designed to be super powerful like the tranx. The rocket is designed to be the fastest SOB on the market, while the tranx 500 pg is also fast but also has power. As for rubber the resistance of the bait isn't such a big deal. You normally use a high speed with jerkbaits to pick up slack line fast. For what your doing I would wait to check out the tranx 400 and 300 or I would go and take a look at a toro beast. I can't speak so much about okuma since I haven't used them.

The reason that people would go with the 400 over the 300? There could be multiple reasons. I would wait for somebody more familiar with the tranx 300/400 than me to comment on this because I haven't even seen them in person. I do think I heard in another thread that shimano might have put the wrong specs online. I could be wrong but I think I heard something about that. But honestly there probably isn't much of a difference. It's probably like going from a beast 50 to a beast 60. I know you get the power handle with the 400 though.

Just my $0.02

Howdy,

I've used all of the reels mentioned except the Okuma and here are my thoughts on the Rocket.

With the largest handle it comes with, doing 10's is not that difficult. Obviously a lower gear ratio is always easier than a higher one, however, the larger handle makes a big difference.

Additionally, I have noticed that 100lb line makes it easier than 80lb due to the spool level dropping more with each cast of equal length. I imagine putting less line on the reel would further address this, while "slowing" the reel down as well (i.e. less line pick up per crank).

Obviously everyone has their own "speed" when to comes to what they feel comfortable with when it comes to cranking and torque, and your mileage may vary.

That said, for me, using the Rocket is an acceptable compromise between having the advantages of high speeds when to comes to landing a fish, vs. the slower, yet easier to crank gear ratios.

Take care,

Ruddiger
