Posts: 9 | Hello everyone. I'm new to musky first. Been looking for a long time. I am going to start trolling a lot more in 2017. I just ordered 3 Shimano TDR rods. My questions are what size Diawa sea lines do you guys use and what type of line to spool them with. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Location: Eastern Ontario | A lot would depend on the water fished, the lures you intend to use , also your lead lengths. I like 100 lb Power Pro on a 30 lb reel works for most situations I run fairly long leads, planer boards and rarely any lures under 10 inches . If i was running flat lines with shorter leads a 20 lb reel is lots and costs less to fill. If I was starting over I would consider forgetting the line counters and using metered line.

Posts: 9 | Thanks for the reply. I fish a lot of smaller lakes like fox chain and Shabbona in illinois. Most of the baits I will be trolling will be smaller than 10 inches. I do own a couple of 10" Jake's that I would troll.

Posts: 243 Location: South Central Wisconsin | I use the 27s with 80# power pro. I put about 20 yards of mono on for a backer and seem to have plenty left on the spool.

Location: Eagle Lake Vermilion Bay, Ontario | while the diawa is a totally adequate line counter reel (i have 4 27's and have had for 20 yrs) if you are just getting into it i would recomend you consider the shimano tekotas. they are a stronger reel, the drags are way way better/smoother in my opinion and the bearings/power /gear ratio you can feel /experience the diff especially when reeling in bigger baits and or fighting fish. i would recommend the 500's. steve herbeck

Posts: 20218 Location: oswego, il | Diawa 27's spooled with 80lb braid will do fine on those lakes. I have two that are 20 years old going strong. You can also find bigger aftermarket power handles for them on ebay if need be but you will at the very least want to use the standard power handle over the paddle handle.

Posts: 241 | I use Daiwa SG17LCA's - but don't run boards on them. Plenty of reel for long-lining, short lining, or prop wash. These aren't salmon we are talking about, right? Also - while not the prettiest girl at the dance, the Penn 209LC will get the job done. Ugly, a bit slow, heavy - but durable, a loud clicker, huge line capacity and inexpensive. I have 4. Low gearing makes them easy to pull in hard pulling cranks, a board - especially if it "submarines"....and even once in a while a fish. Backdraft
