Posts: 154 | Iv heard a lot of people saying that this reel can't handle heavier lures very well. What would be the lure weight range you would throw on this reel in the 6500 size for it too not wear out?

Posts: 291 Location: Minneapolis | It's not so much the weight of the lure as it is how much resistance it has. For instance, a double-10 might only weigh two ounces. That double-10 will be way too much resistance for the reel. A 6" phantom probably weighs more than 2 ounces, and it would be a piece of cake.

Posts: 154 | So like a regular size bull dawg dosnt have much resistance and such so that would work fine? I also find it that the heavier the lure its way harder to push down the button

I also find it that the heavier the lure its way harder to push down the button Let me give you a bit of advice. Heavy lures do put a lot of pressure on the plunger button. When it gets even remotely tough to push down you need to back the spool up with your thumb by a 1/4" or so. If you don't, that spring that operates the plunger will break on you.

Magnum bulldawgs should also work. As stated above, you may need to back the spool up a bit with your thumb before depressing the plunger. I would not use a 6500 with a pounder.

Posts: 391 | If you haven't checked them out the Abu max toros are $150 (cheaper occasionally on the Internet) and from what I've heard are built very well. I used 6500s for a long time, but the lures,on average, are much bigger and harder pulling than they were in 1998... Let's just say my 6500s are now wall decorations.

Problems with the Ambassadeur will mainly occur if you're tossing something heavy and the "bail" accidentally closes during the cast. The gears and other internals aren't up to taking that. Just be careful... The Daiwa Lexa 400 is an excellent choice as a replacement.

Posts: 154 | Does it handle double 10's well? The 400? And I think I'd still use the rod I have now with it, it's a musky innovations bulldawg predator rod 8" lure weight 3-15oz heavy

Posts: 15 Location: Fond du lac, WI | Not trying to Hi Jack, but: I was told that the C3 6500 could throw Double 10's with no problems. So I own two of them. Also, I can relate to the tight button when throwing heavy lures and having to back off on the spool a bit to release the spring. I just looked up the Lexa 400 at Cabela's $249, the Max Toro is $149 and then there's a Lexa 400 HD at $279. Will these reals handle the heavy baits better as to not having to back off on the spool. And will they at 5.3:1 pull double tens? TIA

Posts: 424 Location: MN | You can reel them in with a 5500/6500 C3 - it just wears the gears out and requires a decent amount of cranking power. Adding a power handle helps with the latter issue. There are lots of options for pulling big baits - might want to look at the different sizes, hold them in person, shop around for price, etc. before pulling the trigger. Here's a basic list: Shimano Tranx Abu Max Toro, Toro S, Beast, Rocket Okuma Komodo SS Diawa Lexa, Lexa HD

Posts: 15 Location: Fond du lac, WI | From what I've read the slower 5.3:1 is better on the gears pulling double tens. I have a C4 thats 6:1 and was told that those gears won't hold up to double 10s.

Posts: 154 | The lowest they have is a 6:3.1. Would that work for double 8's?

Posts: 1405 Location: Detroit River | Ya the C3 & the C4 both do not handle the bigger harder pulling baits. Usually the anti-reverse bearing will give out.
