Posts: 167 Location: Tomahawk, WI | Im going to purchase a new trolling motor in the next few days. Im going with a Motorguide X5. Ive always used MGs and Ive never had an issue. Here is the question. What size should I go with? Im already decided on a 24v motor but the X5 comes in 70# and 80# do I need to spend the extra money for 10# of thrust? My boat is 17' long and it weighs 1700 with the motor.

Posts: 1209 | Huh quite the stumper here, I guess if you have 8 gauge wire I'd get the 70# but if you have 6ga I'd go for the 80# I can't think of any other reason they sell them in that range... Or the 80# has a quality grade of "A++". Vs just a "B" grade I believe minnkota does stuff like that cause every terrova seems louder than an equal fortrex.

Posts: 22 | I think the 70 lb is only available in a 45" shaft. What size do you have now? Kris

Posts: 167 Location: Tomahawk, WI | Ugh, 10 hours on the new motor and its in for a new control board already. Should be up and running by Thursday but its a real bummer when you pay that much money and it pukes right away.

Posts: 546 Location: MN | There is info out there on what has been going on with the X5 motors. I hope you are one of the lucky ones and that this is your last issue.

Both were several months old with people that had some of the very first motors made. Nothing recent.
