I was wondering how to replace the middle hook on a pacemaker. Looks like it is connected to the screw that goes into the bait. I know I could use a split ring, but was wondering if anybody has figured out a way, without using a split ring. Thanks BG

Split ring is your best option, removing the screw would compromise the strength. The split ring actually gives more flexibility in the hook allowing it to spin and move more freely, which equals less leverage the fish potentially has on the hooks.

You could replace the screw and hook. If you do that I suggest that you glue the screw back in.
When I used a pacemaker I cut all the tines off the middle hook as it would hook the tail on the turn at boatside. The fish hit either the front or nip at the back hook. The shank would only be used as a sound attraction.

Ty recommends opening the screw eye a bit and then crimping it back down after you've replaced the hook.

I would use a split ring myself. I usually cut the tines off the middle hook. I love pacemakers, my favorite propbait.

I'd trust the guy who built the bait, but that sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

I just do what others have mentioned - cut off the center hook, add a split ring, and use the shank from a larger (7/0) hook as the clicker.

I know a few guys who hang all sorts of #*#* off that hanger to give the bait a different sound. Heard good things, never tried it.

The screw eyes are really strong, just bend it open and slip a new hook in there. Make sure to clip the correct hook point off.

I usually snip mine and replace with split ring and a treble where I've trimmed back the hooks. Yet to have an issue with this.

The other things to do on pacemakers are to add weight to the front hook so the bait starts up on the first crank of the reel and tune the blade some to find the sweet spot of sound. Pacemakers can take some tweaking, but once you get them right the wooden versions have a very unique sound.

My only complaint is they tend to roll over a lot at higher speeds.
