| what rods is everybody using for sucker rods? Just wondering if a stiffer action rod is better for setting the hook or do you want a softer action rod so there is a little give when setting the hook on a fish? |

Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | I'm sure someone's going to come along and insist that you need a $425 custom sucker stick, but anyway... Setting the hook using a quick strike rig is no different than doing it with anyting else. Use any good rod you already have. Pair it with a reel that has a bait clicker, and you'll be ready to go.

| I agree with the Yooper on this one. You will get all over the board answers on this. The only thing I will add is take into consideration that most sucker fishing is done in colder weather, where I would be a little leery using your high-end graphite rods. I like glas or graphite-composite rods for suckers and trolling which the good news here is it usually brings a lower price tag. kdawg |

Location: oswego, il | What Yooper said. I have a south bend and a garcia 7' heavy fiberglas catfish rod. I troll with them too. I did have a buddy of mine blow up two graphite rods setting the hooks on suckers one day, had to take a "break" and bought the garcia catfish rod. |

| I love my Shimano Talora's....but they are a little pricey. Not sure that they are any better than the Shimano TDR's.
As stated, get decent rod, but good reel with a great clicker and you should be set. Spend money on the reel, not the rod. |

I use this rod paired with a Shimano Tekota 500LC and love it. It doubles as my trolling rod so I can use it all season long. I have two of them and have had great success on suckers with them.

yes they are still made and yes they are the best sucker rods I have ever used. I sell a ton of them to customers.

| This might be more than most want to spend, but here we go:
Thorne Brothers Custom Trolling Rod, I believe the blank is the St. Croix E-Glas. Tekota 500LC reel. 100# Braid. Also doubles as primary trolling rod for big cranks / blades all of that.
Too soft a rod hurts on the hooksets IMO, which is why I like something stiffer than your basic glas catfish rod. |

| I've had great luck with the musky innovations 9' live bait/trolling rods also.. I use them for trolling big baits and pulling boards also.. Killer on sucker hook sets!! |
