Are there any options out there for good two piece Musky rods that can handle bigger Jerkbaits/Swimbaits? I own both of the St. Croix Premier rods which are under 8' long and they work great for most stuff, but I struggle to use the bigger baits with them. I know TI makes a 9' rod that is rated up to XXH which is great, but at 4'6" sections this rod is too long for me to travel with. Anyone know of something 8' or so that would handle the bigger baits?

If my TI 2pc does not work you might approach a rod builder like Jawbreaker custom rods. He may be able to take a TI or other brand of blank and build you a 2pc rod. Key is a good design on the spigot joint where the rods connect. message me if you want his contact email. Otherwise, I am not sure of a good shorter heavy 2pc musky rod...? Maybe a saltwater rod but IMO you may have a hard time finding one that is not a broom stick... Good luck

Thanks James - I really like your rods just not sure on how it would work transporting the 4'6" pieces. Anyone else know of something that would work?

Can't help, but just a thought/question for rod builders to help on this. Is it possible to make a 2-piece telescopic rod? In theory, you could have an 8' rod broken down into 2, 3'3" sections if the butt section can also collapse 1.5'.

It is, but a true 3 piece (non telescoping) would make a lot more sense. You're looking at about 26-30" from the top of the fore cork to the butt, if the middle section fits inside the butt section you won't have any guides till 5' or more up the blank, which would suck.

It would a lot of engineering for a tiny market, doubt we'll see anything like that.

I've seen some nice 2 pc and 3 pc (travel) Musky rods that Jawbreaker Customs has made. They are a very good value for the money spent, and you'll have a rod tailored to yourself.

If you go with a Jawbreaker make sure to ask Nick if the blank was designed as multi piece rod or if he just used the scrap from broken rods to build it. True multi piece rods will have reinforced ferrules, one piece rods that are chopped and made into multi piece rods will likely fail at the connection.

I have cut some rods in half cleanly with a dremel for some customers and put a ferrule in, which is a very strong connection. you may lose a little action but on the heavier musky blanks (especially the XXH you are talking about from TI) it wouldn't be that noticeable especially in the middle of the blank. The ferrules are usually pretty visible but the functionality is there. If you live in the Twin Cities area and have an 8 footer you like it would be a pretty easy conversion for me to do for around $20 - $25 or we could build a custom one for you. If you are not in the area and interested send me a PM and we may be able to figure something out.

Abu Garcia's Fantasista Beast Rods in an 8'8" H or XH, 9'1" XXH, 9'7" XH & 10'1" XXH are all 2 piece thru feral constructed rods that will fit into an 8' rod box when broken down. The XXH versions were designed to throw big swimsuits up to a pounder size. I was pretty skeptical about the design until I held the 10'1" with a Beast Reel on it and I was amazed. That rod will be in my arsenal come next year. They even have the palming reel seat. Priced from $299.99 to $349.99.
