Location: Orland Park | I might just try getting rid of some barbs, especially off those treble hooks. I got a 43 earlier this year on a single hook lily tail, and I had some trouble with it. I'm really concerned with hurting a fish. Haven't yet hurt one and I'd like to keep it that way.
Has anyone done away with barbs? And if so, has it cost you many fish? |

Location: Edina, MN | I take the barbs off many of my baits w/ 3 sets of trebles. Don't think it has ever cost me a fish and it sure helps to ease releases. I actually think the hooks penetrate more easily w/o the barbs. If you have ever buried a big trble into your hand with a 40"+ fish on the other end, you will definitely feel more comfort w/ the barbs gone. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | I've been fishing barbless since 1997- I don't think I've lost any fish because of being barbless. This year three hit's (three days fishing Muskies- one fish each day) , three fish in the net. Plus just returned from 7 days at Dogtooth- many large walleyes- up to 31" and a bunch of pike from 36" down, and no lost fish during the battles. After my 1997 experience w/ attachment to a 5 lb Smallie on a Canadian flyin- I immediately switched to barbless (I had to pull the hook myself). I haven't regretted going barbless one bit. Now I get nervous about the other guy's hooks. But I'm firmly convinced I get better hook penetration and it's a lot safer for both the fish and me. It certainly makes the release much faster.
