I had my steering cable seize on me last fall and broke my steering box. I had both replaced and continued fishing as usual for the rest of the season. Now that it is spring time a much warmer I noticed that my steering is way too lose. I have a hard time putting on my transom saver as the motor wants to fall over. Chit even just the torque of starting the motor ( 115HP) will make the steering wheel do a full lap. I can't let go of the stearing wheel at any time while trolling, how am I supossed to fish?

Please someone tell me what I can do to stiffen the damn thing up, and please I was already told to fill the cable with water so to make it rust.

Right now I have setup a bungee cord to hold the steering wheel while I am out of water but there is no way I can do that every time I want to check/clean lines.

Naturaly the guys at the shop told me there is nothing they can do. :(  Should I try to replace the steering cable or steering box?  would it make any difference?

I also found some grey greese coming out of the cable at the box as I was looking for a ajustment screw or something. Does this mean I already have water in there?

Thanks for the help.

P.S. this probably belongs in the boat and motor board but this is urgent.

The steering is adjusted at the motor by loosening the nuts holding the steering assembly and turning the wheel while holding the motor straight until the wheel resists, then tighten the nuts. This will work if the steering assembly isn't broken or damaged.

That sounds like it may work, does it matter what direction you turn the wheel? I will definatly give it a try as this is driving me nuts, now I have to make sure someone grabs the wheel everytime I do something else in the boat.

Not sure, try left first, if I remember correctly. Try a google.com search for steering systems, Marine, too.
