Hey Guys,

I am in need of a replacement lower unit on my 2010 E Tec. Here is what I am being told are my 2 options for refurbished units (new isn't an option for me since it's almost twice the cost of a refurbished one) ...

One of them is a heavy duty “M” SLE type, this is NOT what was originally on the engine but it is more dependable, however, you could lose a few miles per hour on top end.

The other remanufactured gearcase is an “L2” type, this is what the original gearcase would be, but not quite as dependable as the heavy duty one.

My question is what make the heavy duty one more dependable? My main trips each year are to LOTW even though I am careful, there are sometimes rocks involved! I don't see myself missing a few miles per hour as I won't be going full blast that often anyways.

Thoughts?

Thanks - Midge

Dependable yes...more durable when hitting rocks NO.

I have the heavier duty - 74 mph is fast enough for me

LOL bturg - I totally agree. I guess I really didn't mean that I could hit rocks and be ok!

I guess my question is what make it "more dependable?" I am a CPA and not an engineer so I just need to wrap my head around that part.

Thanks!

I have a 2008 E-TEC 250HO and I needed new thermostats installed so when I took to my local Ranger/ Evinrude dealer he said I could get the M-2 lower unit to replace my Lightning lower unit because its a stronger unit with bigger gears in it the M-2 has the 6 water intakes in the nose cone for better cooling and the normal side water intakes. The dealer said the Lightning lower unit had issues for over heating and now with the M-2 lower unit it runs cooler. For no charge because of my serial number on the outboard and a 26 pitch Raker II SS prop. I just had pay what I would have paid for the thermostat work. So I said OK great lets do it and he say I would lose some MPH but that's not a big concern to me its on my 620 Ranger. So you might want to check this out with a Evinrude dealer to see if your outboard serial number qualifies. Im pretty sure the M-2 lower unit is on the new G-2 Evinrude E-TECS.

The larger lower unit gears will give the motor more UMPH on the low end which is good for getting boats out of the water. The loss of MPH is probably not much of an issue...especially if you decide to do a prop change. In most cases, going to a lower gear ratio will allow you to run a higher pitch prop since the gearing can turn it easier.... Much like how it is easier to peddle a bike in 1st gear as compared to 5th gear...the same idea applies..
