Hi all, It’s been a long time since a done a crackle frog pattern so I thought I’d revisit painting one. I like the way this one turned out. This one will be a double flaptail when completed, I also make toppers and creepers out of that body. Let’s see your frog or crackle patterns J Edited by MRichardson 5/16/2016 12:14 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thank you all for the compliments. I had some questions from people about doing crackle. I didn’t think it was unknown. I consider it an old school technique, but let’s not let it become a lost technique. It’s pretty simple really. I sprayed the yellow first. Then I brushed on a thick smooth coat of crackle medium that I bought at hobby lobby http://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Stencils-Craft-Paints/Mediums-Finishes/4-ounces-Crackle-Medium/p/5871 I let that dry overnight. Next I sprayed on the green putting as much on as quickly as possible. When that starts to dry it shrinks on itself and the crackle happens. After that I painted the dots and epoxied like usual. Have fun! Edited by MRichardson 5/17/2016 8:50 AM

Posts: 670 Location: Moses Lake, WA | Mike - I've been using diluted Elmer's Glue for crackle medium and that might be my problem. Will have to try the Hobby Lobby product. Thanks for the info. Gringo Loco

Posts: 1530 | we use the same crackle medium. was sad that the lacquer based crackle was dis-continued in the late 80,s. it was 24 bucks a gallon.

Thanks Todd, I do make a 6” closed loop thru wire jointed bait, and I can certainly do that pattern on it, just not sure I’m ready to get my leg humped though lol Edited by MRichardson 5/17/2016 3:33 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 670 Location: Moses Lake, WA | Mike - Here's a crackle I just finished using your instructions and crackle medium from Hobby Lobby. It's an improvement over most of my previous crackle monstrosities, but instead of getting a uniform size crackle pattern I get some small crackle and then some large areas where the paint pulls way back. I'm not sure what the controlling factors are to make the crackle pattern uniform. Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]()

That looks great Gary. Nice work! I think the curvature and geometry of the bait are what effects the crackle. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I'm guessing the medium allows the paint to slide across the surface as it dries and then shrinks on itself. Thicker paint = more shrinkage Edited by MRichardson 5/26/2016 10:37 PM
