Posts: 5 | Does anyone have any recommendations on who/where to get my boat re-carpeted around the Milwaukee area? I got a quote from Fountain of Youth but it was insanely high and I wanted to know if anyone knows someone that does good work or wants to do it as a side job?

Posts: 206 | I don't have a recommendation in your area but think most places will be expensive. It's a very time intensive project. I had a quote to re-carpet a 17 foot boat a couple years ago and it was approx $2500 to strip off the old carpet/glue, buy new carpet and have it installed. I decided not to buy the boat just for that reason...

Posts: 33 Location: St. Germain, WI | I just finished up my buddies 18' single console aluminum boat. I redid all the decking, new carpet, fixed some busted plumbing and valves, repaired aluminum hatch covers. I had a little over $900 in materials and about 45hrs in labor. It is time consuming and with any restoration so much of it is in prep work. stripping all the old glue off the hatch covers and other aluminum parts are a pain. The actual recarpeting takes time and there is a learning curve to doing hatch lids. I have done a few boats before and my background is cabinet making and finish carpentry, so I have all the tools and general know how. There is a real self satisfaction to doing your own boat and you shouldn't be afraid to give it a try.

Posts: 5 | Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I would like to do the re-carpeting myself-but my work travel schedule will not allow it. If there is anyone around the Milwaukee area that has done this type of work before and is looking for a cash side job please contact me. Thanks

Posts: 271 Location: davis,IL | I re-carpeted my own boat over the winter. I too have very limited time because of work. But I did it one step at a time. First start by removing the decking, console, etc. That takes a few weekends. With everything removed you can start stripping and re-carpeting the decks. I got new fasteners so it went together fairly well, I left the old carpet on the sides of the hull as that didn't look too bad. But its a lot easier when you can take a couple months worth of weekends, working 4-5 hours each day when I was doing it.

Posts: 400 Location: Metro | I just had my boat redone over the winter. It was very expensive and I don't know if you are going to find a way around that unless you had the time to do it yourself. I have a 17-18 foot skeeter that got all the carpets and seats re done for around $4500. Wish I could say there was a magical dealer somewhere that would do it for less than $2,000 but I don't think you are going to find that anywhere.

Posts: 1763 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I did my boat over the winter, and I have about $1650 in mine. Carpet, glue, spar varnish, marine grade plywood, new SAS seats, and all the associated hardware. It is not cheap to remodel a boat and do things right. If you want it done right and for less money, you will have to do it yourself.
