Posts: 1405 Location: Detroit River | When I first got that reel I liked it a lot, more than I liked my Revo Toro. It cast great & was super smooth but then I noticed when pulling/jerking Medussa's dawgs etc. the spool would move on every jerk letting out about a 1/2" of line. I've been meaning to call Okuma about it but I've been procrastinating too much.

Posts: 151 Location: Chippewa Falls, WI | I agree Slamr, I'm not nearly as well versed as others on these forums but from personal experience with a winch, all sizes and gear ratio's of NaCl's, 6500's, curado's, and Lexa's. I recently bought an HG (with upgraded power handle) for big rubber and burning blades and and PG (with longer power handle) for bringing in BIG blades and for days where blazing speed isn't the answer or I'm just not up for cranking the HG. There is nothing that I've tried (maybe the 4.9:1 beast to compare to the PG?) that can really compete with the Tranx, it's in a league of its own in my eyes anyways.

Posts: 7092 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | My point was more that you have to match the reel's capabilities with the application you want to use it for. Yes, faster gear ratios bring baits in faster (ie. Burning blades), but if the gears are not made to withstand that kind of torque, you will have no one to blame but yourself when you break the reel.

Posts: 340 Location: Lake County Illinois | The Komodo has been a solid reel for me. Great on my jerkbait rod and also for throwing cranks and bucktails ,double 8s and under. Also might try putting the Okuma Citrix 354 5.4:1 gears in a Komodo since I like these reels so much and Mark Rogers of Okuma ,California Muskie in the forum has offered a discounted price on the gears if we email him.

Posts: 78 | The Komodo is a fine reel, well made and all stainless gear train. But at 6.4:1 it is not ideal for large baits with a lot of resistance. Revo Toro Beast in 4.9:1 is the King of Cranking power....for 27" per turn. The Tranx PG in 4.9:1 is the King of Cranking power....for 30" per turn and mo' money. The Revo Toro Beast in 6.2:1 is a close second to the Tranx for cranking power....but brings in 34" per turn. Weight, the Komodo is barely above 11oz, Revo Toro Beast is 14oz and the Tranx is....21oz. Komodo is a great reel for 11oz but is not ideally suited to burning D10's. Toro Beast is the best of all worlds, imo, weight vs power. Tranx is specialized due to its high weight and large size that makes palming nigh impossible, but does offer the best cranking power for 30" per turn. I personally prefer a Toro Beast for a little faster and use the jigging handle (that is even longer than a Tranx handle). YMMV.

Posts: 72 | Does the jigging handle on the beast make any problem when casting because its not counter balanced?

Posts: 21 | Daiwa Lexa HD400XS-P What are people's reviews on this reel? Do they work well for pulling D 10's ? Any info would be great thanks. I'm just trying to get some better reviews before making a purchase. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/field-test/hits-and-misses-of-t... Here is a link I was looking at.

Posts: 318 | I would imagine that the LexaHD400XS-P would be a nightmare for pulling 10s for any longer than about an hour.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Guys Guys Guys A reel does not BURN a DC10 unless it can bring in line at 38 inches or greater I like reels that have 40 inches plus of line pickup !! The only reels that will do that is the Tranx High Speed or a Trinidad 16NA There are some other Salt water reels that can but I would not use them. This is what I feel, I would get a reel with 5 gears or 4 gears Put a power handle on it and that will bring DC10. But not Burn them in the true since. Reels I recommend : Tranx HS to burn DC10 best reel for that NO OTHER REEL COMPARES ! PERIOD ! Reels that will bring in DC10 and not wear your hand out Calcutta D 400 with a Power Handle Abu Beast with the power handle Abu S with the power handle from a Beast The Komodo is a great reel but I would use it for Jerk Baits Or top water. Pm for more in depth talk on reels All reels are good for at least one style of bait.

Posts: 427 | Richard, You forgot to mention the saltist. I do not have one, however my dad does and I have used it a fair amount. While it does not cast as well as the tranx it still has good speed and is built like a tank. I still reach for my tranx and dad reaches for his when it comes time to pull blades but for the money if a guy was on a budget it would be hard to argue with the saltist.

The 20 Saltist is rated at 35 inches And it is Built like a Tank, comes with a power handle, The only thing the reel is missing is SPOOL BRAKES which makes this reel Very hard to cast lighter baits into the wind. Use this reel on a little lighter rod and will be fine But don't put on a XXX rod and cast light buck tails into the wind LOL LOL

Posts: 750 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Yeah, it really is too bad that they don't put spool brakes on the saltist, you'd have a killer musky reel. As it is, I only use mine for rubber.

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Guys Guys Guys How is it that a Okuma review and every other reel thread gets hijacked by the pro-Tranx lovers? If a person would be looking for info on the Komodo he'd have to sift through all those non-Komodo drivel. If its not about the Komodo then and you have something to say - start a another thread.
