I have a 2005 Alumacraft Magnum 165CS with a bad stern light. It works intermittently which has lead me to believe there is a short somewhere or a bad connection. Replacing the stern light base and pole seem like the best solution; I've found parts on the internet and they're reasonably priced.

Before I do that is there anything else I should look at or consider?
Thanks in advance,

Check for corrosion, water and any metal will corrode some over time. I'm guessing the brass contacts are corroded.

Also check the connections on the switch that turns it on

Are you speaking of the connection between the stern light base and the stern light pole?
Or is there another wiring connection somewhere (besides the switch)?

Thanks

Pull the light fixture and look over the inside and outside to make sure it's all clean and wires are tight.

First thing I would do is clean the pins and the receptacle if you can get in there with something. (electric parts cleaner aerosol spray might be your best bet) and then a little coating of di-electric grease on the pins for good measure.

Hiya!!

If you have a buddy with the same fixture, borrow his/hers first and see if that light works the same as yours or works perfectly. It narrows down the issue without spending money. If it continues to flicker, the short is somewhere between the base and the switch...most likely the base. The light mast will vibrate when traveling, so if it is flickering while under way, my bet would be loose connection somewhere at the base, or at the connectors leading into the base.

The base will come up with two screws. I'd say check your leads there first...

Check the connections for the bulb too.
