Lakemaster, depth hi light and shallow water hi light,(in birds) has a few local waters that other chips don't, and the primary reason is 1' contours on more of the lakes I fish.

For me it depends on the lake I am fishing. My home lake, the Lakemaster is better because of the ability to link with my Terrova. However, the lakes I fish in N. WI, the navionics chip has lakes that my Lakemaster does not even cover.

I like how the navionics premium chips are split up as far as regions, I could get one chip that covers all of my area. With lake master, i need a minnesota chip as well as a great plains chip for iowa. This kinda sucks since i have yet to fish in IL, KS, MO, or NE.

That being said, I haven't used either yet, but did order lakemaster chips for my new humminbird as i feel they offer the best options for my situation.

Not having my electronics linked to my trolling motor, I run both/either depending upon which one, if either, has mapped the lake I am fishing in high def. If neither has mapped your favorite lakes, talk to those who run either chip on that body for reference as one is sometimes better than the other in it's interpolation of a particular lake. Otherwise best to check the website for each and cross reference the bodies of water you fish in order to see if your lakes have been mapped. Also, just because there is a map for that lake on the chip, doesn't mean it has been mapped by that company. The lake listings will indicate as to whether or not it has been. In the end, to me, it doesn't matter what the map colors are or whether it can link to my unit. If one or the other has the lake I am fishing, mapped in high def, those are the chips I install that day. More often than not it is Lakemaster.

I've always preferred Lakemaster over Navionics.  Much better accuracy and detail.

However, now that they are no longer interchangeable within units.... my faithfulness to Lowrance requires me to run Navionics.

It does suck needing 4 chips for two birds mn and plains, but I run 2 hds9's and 2 999's side by side bow and console and I would t be without LM but having base maps and a navionics map also doesn't hurt

Just curious, why the faithfulness to Lowrance?

Faithful to Lowrance because its what I know... and I've not had any bad experiences with them.

If I were to re-rig my boat would I consider changing brands to allow me to use Lakemaster maps? Perhaps. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

I just wish all map chip brands were compatible in all Sonar/GPS brands so this question didn't even need to asked. Its how it used to be.....

based on the prices of electronics regardless what brand you buy ... it sort of forces you to be faithful, unless you are filthy rich.

Couple of things on Navionics they constantly updating mapping on lakes, you can preview the lake mapping on the website at https://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en#@6&key=w%7DeqGfwiwP. When you go their zoom in and click on the Sonar Icon on the lower left corner for the SonarChart layer this is Navionics HD layer and the layer that gets improvements as they do mapping. If you have been running Hotmaps Premium it does not contain the SonarChart layer the card is to small to hold all this data.

The SonarChart Layer is available on Hotmaps Platinum and Navionics+. Couple of things on these 2 cards Platinum is regional card No, So East, West and Canada. Nav+ is now available so that one card covers all of US and Canada and comes preloaded with Nautical charts fro all of US and Canada which is the first view when you go the web app. You then download the SonarChart Layer to the Navioncs + for the regions you fish, you can have multiple regions such as Kentucky, Great lakes, MN and WI and Canada all on one card.

Because SonarChart layer contains so much data they can’t load it all on the card so you select the areas that you want.

One other card that is available is the Navionics Updates card fro 99.00 vs 199.00 of the 2 above. It contains all the data and works the same as Nav+ but you need to own a map card already any SD map card except Hotmaps Platinum. you activate Nav Updates thru a process using your old map card which can be Lakemaster, Lowrance, Premium. Once activated the Updates card becomes a Nav+

All Navionics Cards come with a year of updates so you can refresh your card as many times as want during he first year to keep your card updated and on Nav+ and Updates you can add and subtract areas on the card for a year. After the first year to reactivate the Update process it is half the price of a new card.

if you own a Platinum card now you can buy a year of updates fro 99.00 vs paying 199.00 for a new card.

As an added bonus get the Mobile app al the same mapping as the card, great supplement to your map card, allows you to sit in your cabin, car or work and prefish

Lakemaster - for of these reasons and for the fact that I can run my Terrova from my Humminbird Fish finders and use the Lakemaster chips to follow a specific contour on the hi-def lakes...I fish while the boat moves around the structure.
