Lets get back to the original topic on this post. Please keep this one clean.

The way I work the Triple D is similar to Jason. He does, however, seam to work his more aggressively. Cast it out. I crank it down till about 6-7 ft (5-8 cranks of handle), then start my twitches. The way I "twitch" is like this. My rod is usually pointing down at around the 4:00 position and I usually jerk up. My jerk, more like a snap-pull action, is actually usually fairly hard and almost always at least two in a row. I'll mix in 3 once in awhile, and very seldom do 1 twitch. I do a very slight pause just before the twitch also. As soon as I'm done "twitching" I go back to my retrieve for another 5 cranks or so, and repeat. Very near boatside I most often give the lure some very violent rips up, and follow it with maybe a half arc figure eight. If you can get the lure to come straight up you are in business. I have had so many fish hit it like this.

I will do down "twitches" in the same manner as my up twitches when I want just a little more added depth. I think the one thing that may be confusing to people is "twitch". I'm not twitching at all, but ripping and jerking the bait. If I want the lure to run pretty shallow I'll work it just like a glide bait or jackpot with a walk the dog retrieve. Think of that kind of rod movement, and add a little more force into it when cranking.

If the fish aren't eating, try longer pauses after your twitches before you continue cranking. Also twitch and pause the bait about 10 ft from the boat and let it sit for a bit.

Hope this helps. What ever way you work it, the lure just plain catches fish! With the exception of my younger bro, this lure has an excellent hook up.

Good post Travis, nice to have posts like your on this board. I have yet to use a triple D and will break one out next time I hit the water.
Keep up the streak your on, I hope it never lets up. Stick a pig this weekend.
Jason please feel free to post your methods on this thread. Everyone works a bait their own way. We should let the fish make the decision to which one works the best that day.
Lets keep this board clean. Private messages are for rippin on each other.

Shep, a client catching a muskie is better than 6 fish seen. I am glad we caught one and wish you could have stuck the pig you had going or one of the others.
I figured I would add this to my post instead of posting again.

Well, I can say that I bought my first (3) DDD's on Thursday. The way that I fished it Friday afternoon was to cast out and give it one good rip down. From there I would keep the rod tip at about the 4:00 position and sharp twitch it to the 5:00 position. I usually did one, but sometimes two twitches at a time. About 10' from the boat I would stop everything and let the bait rise ever so slowly. The fish came right up with it. I would then twitch it to within about 5'-6' of the boat so the bait was about 3' down. About 3' from the surface I would rip it straight up and go into a figure 8.

What was my success doing this? In 3 1/2 hours of fishing I raised 19 different musky from roughly legal up to "OH MY GOD". 18 of the 19 were on the DDD and the other on a Baby Shallow Raider. Boated a 37" that hit on the pause half way to the boat and boated a 39 1/2" that ate it boat side on the rip and figure 8. It ate it before I had a chance to go into the figure 8. The "OH MY GOD" fish was like a submarine rising up out of no where as I let the bait do its rise 10' out. Came into a figure 8 and sank back down.

Went back to the same lake and spots today and we only saw 3 fish total. One was up on a Mepps Giant Killer, missed one on a Mepp Musky Marabou and had one other one up on a DDD. Definitely not the same action; something was happening Friday afternoon.

Oops, I did have one up on a Top Raider also fishing in the shallows on Friday.

I will be making 3 changes to my DDD's though. 1) The split rings will be yanked really quick!! Not a fan of those at all. 2) Heavier duty hooks will be put on. Too thin and week for my liking. 3) Suspend dots will be added to the tail section so it rises more horizontally; more naturally. Just things I noticed right from the get go.

I do like the action of the bait and the ease of working it. I will give these baits a 4 fish rating out of a possible 5.

Chuck

HEY TRAVIS, GIVE ME A CALL!! MY SCHEDULE IS GETTING TIGHT, BUT CAN STILL SNEAK SOME TIME IN.

If you add heavier hooks you probably won't need any suspend dots. You may in fact sink the bait.
