Posts: 337 Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | I've noticed the Daiwa Lexa HD 400 is selling for as low as $240. Have any of you used it, and if so, how does it compare to the regular Lexa? Fr. K

Posts: 427 | I loved the looks of that reel until I looked at the speeds, cant imagine that thing having any power at all but is probably awesome at picking up slack line.

Posts: 88 Location: Des Plaines, IL | Last year I got the power version of the Lexa 400 (5.1:1) for throwing blade baits and was very happy with the performance. This year I added the 7.1:1 in the non HD (not sure if it has a different feel than the HD). So far all I've done is go to the local ponds to dial the reel in and see how it works, and the verdict is positive. I got this reel to work rubber baits and really large crank or jerk baits, and all of those felt good with the amount of line pickup it has. Hoping to get out on the water in a couple weeks to give it a more rigorous test.

Posts: 337 Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | Thanks. Please post a review after you've used it for a while. I've got the 400 in 6.3:1 and really like it, so the faster, heavier model interests me, and I'm sure others would like to know about it as well. Fr. K

Posts: 283 | I bought a 8.1:1 400 HD XSP-L (I think) the week they came out. I have a 300 HSL-P (7.1:1) as well. As far as feel I like the 300 better but thats just a size thing and my style of fishing. I would love to trade my 400 8.1:1 for a 300 8.1:1 but I can deal if that doesn't happen. I mostly fish gliders and jerks, very seldom do I throw a high resistance bait such as a large crank or blades. I love the line pickup for the gliders/jerks, I could see it being great for throwing rubber if you rip it with the rod and reel in the slack. The speed was something I needed to get used to, it was tough to work certain baits until I had a little time to play around and find the right cadence. After getting used to the reel I was able to dial in lurea and there is a certain jerkbait that I used to have to work so hard to get the proper action while picking up the line, now with the 8.1:1 I can literally just use the reel and it works the bait for me and allows for easy line pickup at the same time. I threw a double 8 for maybe a half hour tops, I just don't care for blades (a goal this upcoming season is to use them more as sometimes I have trouble finding fish and throwing blades would be an intelligent move in my limited time to fish). If I recall, the blades came in pretty good, I could probably throw the 8's for a few hours at a time swapping back and forth with a glider/jerk. I did not throw 10's at all. I threw either a double 6 or 7 for a while (smaller Muskie Metal model). I could throw/burn that all day long with no problem. Now for the bad. When I first got the reel, there was a small spot every revolution that would feel a small bit of resistance (more than I thought was acceptable for a $299 msrp HD reel). Once I put braid on I was no longer able to notice that resistance. Now for the really bad, the 7th or 8th time I used it, the line guide kept gettin stuck on the left side of the reel, rendering the reel inoperable as the line would pile up and get stuck. It took me a bit to figure it out (I think), a chip of paint got into the worm gear and when the line guide went over it multiple times, it wrecked the "tracking" of the line guide. I am sending it into Daiwa this week, hopefully it will be a quick turnaround and hopefully they won't charge me but who knows. All in all I love the reel, especially the power handle, the foam is super comfortable and will probably look into the possibility of replacing my 300's power handle. The only dislike I have besides the fact that I have to send it in for repair so soon after purchase, is the size which really is a personal preference and has nothing to do with the reels function. I hope this helps some. Trevor

Posts: 337 Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | Thanks much Trevor. Sounds like there are quality control issues in this model as well. I hope Daiwa irons them out soon.
