I purchased a 2005 boat a couple of years ago. It came with a Mercury 200 EFI salt water version. The motor had very low hours (60.1). As it turned out everything works great on this boat. I haven't had any problems with the motor but I noticed that the water stream from the pump was weak and spitting at times and not a constant stream. If I put some RPM's to the motor the stream would get better. I never had any warning tones that the motor was overheating. I thought the impeller may have dried out or chipped with age so I replaced the impeller last year. After replacement I was sure to get that solid stream and was disappointed that the results were the same.
Does anyone have any experience with this and a solution to this issue? I'm sure this is not normal. Every other boat motor I see even when idling has a solid stream of water spewing out their motor. My 9.9 kicker motor has a stronger stream then the 200 hp. Any help would be appreciated.

This may be completely normal as this is just an indicator that you are pumping water. My Yamaha 150 has a fairly weak stream when compared to my Merc 5 kicker, but all is well. I have a temperature gage mounted on my 150 to monitor just that....engine temp. If in doubt mount a sender and gage on the big motor, that way you can always watch whats going on there.

I had the same concern once. It is just an indicator that water is circulating. Make sure your overheat alarm is connected and stop analyzing it. I have a habit of over analyzing things.

I've had mine get plugged a time or three, usually by weed fragments that get ingested by the impeller. The fragments seem to get stuck right at the fitting that connects the pi$$er tube to the engine block, which on my engine is a 90° elbow about 2 feet in from the end of the tube. I now keep a length of fairly stiff weed-wacker line in the boat, line that fits into the tube and is long enough to reach the fitting at the block plus enough to hold on to. A couple of rotations of the line after it's fully inserted is usually enough to clear the pi$$er tube.

I think that motor only spits water when the thermostats are open, so unless motor is warmed up, it will not have much water coming out. I also would be replacing your impeller if that has not been done in the past 2 years.
