My brother and I won a trip to Eagle Lake for the 2004 seaon and were wondering if there was any advise to be shared. I have read that the guide help is needed. I would appreciate any info that is willingly shared.
Thanks, The Musky Shakes-Mark

What time of year are you going, were are you going to be staying. Muskie fishing on Eagle is different in different times of the season, and different locations on the lake.

I will most likely be going up there in either July or August. We will be staying at Andy Meyer's Lodge. Thanks, Mark

I would HIGHLY consider getting a guide for one -two days. Eagle is not the easiest to crack, depending on your experience it can be down right overwelming. Getting those first couple days confidence built up with a guide will definately improve your odds on the trip. I know if I wouldn't have had some awesome friends who took me under thier wing (Thanks Donnie and Craig!) I would not have had the experiences I have had on Eagle. Plus, the lake can be hard on a lower unit if you don't learn where and where not to go.

With that said....you will love it! I am going twice too Eagle this year...The beginning of July and Mid August.

Best of Luck!

Great thing about AML (one of many) is that Herbie is going to work HARD to get all his guests on fish. Spots (hundred+) are marked on a map that lives in the lodge, and Steve and his guides have no "secret" spots that they won't share with you.
I concurr with Mr. Painter: get a guide for your first day, ask for Cal or Mike, both great guys and a trip to fish with. Tell them that you want to catch a fish, but more so want to get familiar with the waters, spending a few extra bucks will greatly enhance the learning curve.
Baits, though I havent been up there in a few years, here's what has always worked for us:
topraider
bulldawgs (mag and med)
10" Jake
bucktails (8-10")
Take 12 baits in those types and you should be fine.
Depending on water temps at the time, the fish in the end of July will more than likely be still relating to weeds, but the later you go, the more they make a transition over to being rock related.
Go to Herbies site early and often to get tips on what you should bring/expect/etc.: http://www.andymyerslodge.com/reports.htm
ALSO, Eagle can be a tough nut to crack, definitely consider a day or two on the action lakes that he has boat access on!
Hope this helps!!!

I fished eagle last year early in the season and got 4 muskies. The biggest was only 41", but it was right around the muskie opener. I loved it. I caught over 100 pike, most of them smaller but some decent ones.

Got 3 of 4 skis on a 7 1/2" Grandma holoform and the other on a large Rapala. There were alot more caught that week in our camp including a 50" Plus caught on a rizzo tail. Decent smallmouth and walleye action to. I'm sure I'll be back.

As others have said, a guide would be a big help - Cal and Mike are great, but Herbie guides his clients at no extra charge so you might get lucky - I'd be sure to ask him if he's available.

Also, there are numerous other lakes in the area that are more action - oriented lakes. The week we went there was only 1 fish caught on Eagle the whole week but one group had a 9 fish day on Corner. I've also heard of 10+ fish days on Stewart - Herbie has boats on lots of lake to choose from. If he makes a suggestion listen.
