Posts: 462 Location: Syracuse, Indiana | My experience: Verizon works in and near Fort Frances, Dryden, and over most of the Vermilion Bay, Portage Bay, and Eagle Bay areas of Eagle Lake. In fact, I negotiated a matter for a client 2-3 years ago while perched on the front deck of my boat, floating in Vermilion Bay. I can regularly place and receive calls where I fish on Eagle (your call as to whether that level of availability represents a positive or negative development for mankind). Verizon has no service most of the way up Hwy 502. Texting and data usage, however, are another matter. Despite having the "Canadian Package", I can only receive (not send) texts, cannot access data (without a wifi hot spot), and cannot access voice mail. Check beforehand with your carrier.

Posts: 31 | Definitely ask about the Canada plan. It's not expensive, last time I took my phone with me to actually use, then worked stopped paying for international plans. Now I take it with me for emergencies only and turn it off when I hit the border. It's very liberating to be without actually. I think if you made 3-4, 5 minute calls you'd spend more than the plan for a month. Edited by BigEasy 2/10/2016 6:28 PM

Posts: 1039 Location: North St. Paul, MN | with my windows phone, on Cliff Lake last year I was able to make and receive calls and texts. No data though, so couldn't send or receive pictures. Cost was minimal. With a wife and kid, I'm extremely happy with the changes in cell phone coverage up that way in the last five years. I know further up the highway, on Lac Seul, I get similar service (not quite as good...a little more hit and miss).

Posts: 306 | I haven't been to Eagle in 4 years, but last time up there at Eagle Lake Island Lodge (basically in the middle), I had some reception. Probably enough to make phone calls or texts, but that was about it.
