Location: Glen Ellyn Il | I have a regular I pilot on my Terrova, wondering if it's worth to spend 800.00 dollars for the I pilot that has the contour feature to follow a predetermined depth. I do have an Onix Humminbird unit that the I pilot will be linked to

Location: Kodiak, AK | I'll admit, I'm not entirely familiar with which contour it follows...on a chart or actual sonar. If it's on a chart, it'd depend on how accurate the charts are...many aren't 100% accurate. Or if it follows sonar contours, will it be hunting for depth? If you go from 12 to 11 to 12 to 13 to 12, but it's all really the same countour, will it freak out? I say not worth $800. Plus, even with my iPilot, I still like to manual control my boat. I use bearing and spot lock 99% of the time. I seldom use the actual trail mode because wind or boat orientation may differ slightly and I want to be in control of the boat. |

Location: Ashland WI | It follows the contour line that is on the chart. It would be as accurate as the chart, and your gps location.

| I prefer to use "legacy autopilot " and control my boat more than follow a contour. The standard autopilot wants to track straight in a line and fight wind drift to do so. I prefer to ride the drift with the motor facing one compass setting. |

14ledo81, you answered my dilemma, would not be worth the 800 if it follows the chart, even dough I have Navionics Canada maps lots of places it's not that accurate. When I fish LOTW I like to keep my boat in 20fow and cast rocks on the shore line, I will keep on doing what I have done follow a weed line or a rock bar with the I pilot North, Thanks Gino |

It does not work with a Navionics chip anyway. You would need a Lakemaster chip.
There is another option to accurate mapping though. The new Helix units (9,10,12) come with "Auto-chart live". You can make your own map. The more you criss-cross the area, the more accurate the map becomes. You can then follow the contour on your "made" map.
There is more than just "follow the contour" with the i-pilot link. I can see it being very nice to have. One option that I think would be nice is that you can create a series of waypoints, and then tell the motor to go from point to point to point.
Look up some youtube videos on i-pilot link and auto-chart live. Very informative. |

Your Onix unit has the Auto chart live on it already. You just need a zero line map chip to use it. Once you have it, a few passes around the lake and you have a custom accurate chart and the Follow the contour becomes amazingly accurate. Makes the Ipilot Link worth it in my book. I bought mine last year...

Yes it does, it provides Side imaging 3D views of the bottom... I haven't messed with it all that much yet, but it's on the list for this year.

Location: Glen Ellyn Il | I do use Auto Charts Live, but only in lakes that do not have a good chip map, that is an awesome program and I have both Navionics and Lakemaster. This last fall I mapped out Lake Waubesa rock bars and some weedlines on the Madison Chain I used my side imaging also to gps structure, the Onix 10 its a very cool machine |

Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | I-Pilot Link is nice, but very expensive if you don't have Lakemaster maps, and especially so if you have more than one Humminbirds that are networked. I fish Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Each location is on a different map, so I'd need to have six map chips to use I-Pilot Link, plus the upgrade on the Terrova. That's a of $$$
