Now that the Beast has been out for a while what are the opinions as to which reel (Tranx or Beast with lower gears) would be better for big baits? They both look like pretty good products and good reviews so far....

Thanks!

If your an Abu guy, you will say the Beast. Shimano guys will say Tranx. Kdawg

I'm a Shimano guy, though I prefer the Beast because of the size. But it ain't no Tranx in terms of performance.

I was nervous about buying a Tranx due to the size and weight. I paired it with a light rod and now I don't even notice the weight and the size felt normal after a few hours. I suppose if you have tiny hands it may be tough to get used to. I throw everything from big to small baits with my tranx and it works great. There is nothing that competes with the Tranx for performance IMO.

I think you need to have the Beast out for a full season before asking that question. Now that Abu has reached a pinnacle in terms of price for there musky reels they will have to hold up like there peers. No reason to assume they wont but as my man Denny Green used to say "The proof is in the pudding".... I think there are a large group of people letting the early adapters play guinea pig and waiting to see how they do...

One thing I know PM will say is that they are not designed to do the same/perform the same, and he would be correct. Somehow through all the teasing and introduction, and the promotion, hype, and anticipation, I think a lot of folks wanted to believe they were getting a Tranx in a smaller, lighter package. Nobody at ABU or anyone else that I am aware of ever actually said that, but that was the feeling I think many people had. They wanted to believe... That being said, the Beast is an awfully nice reel and I will use one, it just ain't no Tranx. And I won't use a Tranx

If you crank with the right hand, it's a Tranx.

If you crank with the left hand, it's a Beast.

There are several threads on this board that explain just that in GREAT detail. Look around a bit!

Been using ours for two seasons. Bulletproof.

Did you read the other threads on the build? It's pretty clear how well the reel is made and what it was made to do. Both are good reels, both have a purpose, and both meet the purpose well.

That said, I'm ordering two more Toro S models.

Howdy,

For those of you that have used them both what are the noticeable differences and Pros and Cons?

Take care,

Ruddiger

Tranx Pros: Capacity, strength, drag, cranking power

Tranx Cons: Size, weight, capacity (too much). Cost.

Beast Pros: Size, weight, casting, cranking power for its size, Drag control, still has finesse.

Beast Cons: Capacity, cranking power (a smaller reel will always have less, but it handles D10s easily). Overall strength (really more in a saltwater context, nothing in freshwater can challenge it).

You can get 2 Toro S for the lowest price you can find on a Tranx.
