| I've got a few NACL's and regular Toro's. Is there a fix or upgrade option for the thumb bar mechanism or parts?
I love this reels. But this thumb bar mechanism keeps giving me problems over and over again..... |

| If you are referring to the thumb bar being hard to push down, iv'e only seen the problem on the NACL model, my old models works like a charm.
A good clean and re-lube will do a lot for the reel, but it seems to come back relatively fast, haven't found a way to get completely rid of it, thought of adding the strip of glass fiber teflon tape to the surface where the thumb bar seems to bind, but haven't tried it yet.

| Yes it's mainly a nacl issue. What parts do you clean and relube? And what products domyou use? |

| Iv'e had the biggest problem where the "clutch link" slides up the frame.
Think its part nr 6 in this picture, its the part that goes trough the thumb bar.

| I m not sure what part you mean. Nr. 6 is a screw.... What's the name of the part?
But is there a upgrade posible for that part or the mechanism? |

Location: Western U.P. | Sounds like a problem more common to the 60's than 50's, but can happen to both. The thumb bar mechanism is on the handle side of the reel, and the opposite side of the bar is just a track. If you consistently push the bar down on the opposite side (of the handle), it will eventually bend the thumb bar down on that side making it harder and harder to engage. If you look at the reel from the back, the thumb bar drops down towards the left (for a 50/60, and opposite for a 51/61). Not one of AG's better designed mechanisms, but it is what it is, and they are nice reels. When pushing the thumb bar down, try to train yourself to do it on the reel handle side of the button. This will pretty much eliminate the problem. Found out the hard way, and Mat at Mat's Reel Repair explained it when I brought in a 60 NaCl with this problem. Have several NaCl's, and no problems since. Can't help with part #'s, but this could be what is going on with your reel. No mechanical upgrades for this problem, just a procedural one that I'm aware of. |

| The 2 reels iv'e bin working on was 50's (well 51's) and they see a ton of use, they worked great when they were new. |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | pull the reel apart and remove the bar that goes through the thumb bar. There is a screw that holds it in place in the front side of the thumb bar. Clean the teflon glides, sides of the thumb bar, and the frame where the thumb bar rides. Apply a light coating of grease to the sides of the thumb bar and the frame where it rides and re-assemble. While you have it apart, you might as well clean and lube the rest of the reel. They are relatively simple reels to work on and the parts blow out will help with re-assembly if you have problems.
Also do not press the thumb bar to release while the reel is under a load. This will bend the bar that goes through the thumb bar and cause the thumb bar to dig into the frame. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Make sure you push down on the Thumb Bar, what happens is most will put there thumb on the front of the bar and push in and down, that will cause the bar to rub on the frame and wear groves in the frame which will cause the Thumb Bar to stick. Put your thumb on top and push down, not in and down.

Location: north central wisconsin | I was told that the only absolute 'fix' is a new frame, but was told that pushing on the side, and keeping lubed will definitely reduce/eliminate the need for the costly repair. Give Chuck Brod a call at Sportsmans Repair and he can explain what has happened once the button becomes difficult to press. |

Location: varies | I have 5 of these reels and I believe they are all difficult to push down. My work around is when I'm done with the cast, I push the button down with the bait still in the water. push's easy with no tension on the spool. |
