My wife was doing some research at the Tomahawk WI library yesterday and happened upon a story from 1922 where the author discussed the rapid "despoiliation" of lakes in northern WI. The local people are using dynamite and spears to take fish by the "washtub" full. In some cases they break open spillways of old lumber #*^@s and use spears to take the fish that come through the spillways. More damaging is the wholesale dynamite blasting of lakes. The take the big fish but kill hundreds of small fish. ( the story makes clear that the worst offenders are the "foreign workers" brought in by the lumber companies).

The story says the Land o' Lakes association is reported to be making an effort to get folks to protest the easy availability of dynamite. The story says that "It is recognized that the big tourist attraction of the Northland at this time is the king muskie, and once the species has vanished the lure of the lakes will be considerably lessened".

Interesting that nowhere in the story are walleyes mentioned, that the big concern is the muskie population and that was the headline in the summer of 1922.

Sort of amusing. It would be cool to have a copy of the article framed in the man cave.

The line about foreign workers. Lol.
