Bigger rubber and bucktails during the summer months.

Should be great for that, it's what i use it for. I really like the size of the SX, haven't tried the SXJ, but don't feel like i have to go for a smaller model.

It's also awesome for trolling with planers, or jigging, i also used mine for cod jigging as well.

Of course the "no level wind" takes a bit of getting used to, but i never think much about it any more.

I have the SX MC model and love it for bucktails.
Two suggestions: don't totally lock the drag down as it toasts the pinion bearings and order two spare pinion bearings just in case. They r very cheap and handy to have Nd easy to replace.

They are indeed a fine reel, but if you have no intentions of using it for saltwater there are reels out there for less money that will do the job you want ......I did have to replace the gear in the one I had also... I switched to the newer Saltist 20 and just love it. Unless you need a left hand retreive model then thats a different story. Zinox is correct, once you get used to the none levelwind feature it all comes natural............There is a fellow on Ebay who sells slight blems...very cheap...he always has all the models available...good luck with your New reel.....Mike

Reason I want an avet is because it is the closest thing to a tranx for a lefty.

Gotcha....... Any thought on the new Abu Garcia Beast? that might be a better choice ( just my Opinion).... I absolutely love my Beast and it is lighter, has levelwind, and offers different Handle options, and is Great for Salt water if needed......

I have looked at it but when I put the topic "closest reel to a tranx for lefties" most people said the avets... same price point. Any problems with your beast so far?

Has anyone tried the Avet JX 6.0 casting reel? It looks similar to a Trinidad and offers 46" per crank.
