| So, i'm not going to start making my own leaders, i have enough crap to do...but i just lost ANOTHER 8" SHaker...OUCH and phantom due to leader problems last weekend...So, what Muskie First guys make their own leaders? and who would like to sell me some?

b. do you want to sell any...?

Location: WI - Land of small muskies and big jawbones | I know that Fred's Tinsel Tails makes very good leaders and reasonably priced. He uses very good snaps and swivels. He was selling them along with his baits at a musky show I was at a few months ago. They are not listed on his website but you can get his email address from there and send him an email and get more information from him. I have been making titanium leaders for a few years and have been known to sell some from time to time. I have a few extras right now in the 90lb seven strand vintage with bb swivels and crosslock snaps about 12 inches long. Sell for $5 apiece plus postage. Split ring your bait to the leader and you shouldn't have that problem
Unless the leader is breaking....that I never heard off?

Location: Oshawa, Ontario | I agree with the previous reply, split ring to the bait - a bit of a pain, but worth it!! Have a look at www.leadersforless.com I just got some fluoro-carbon leaders from him and they look great for twitching in clear water.

Location: Hartford, WI | I have had more problems with split rings that with Stringease snaps. No matter what system you use, from time to time there will be problems. Inspect your leaders often and remember at any time anything can break.

Location: Hartford, WI | I had everything from the bait working itself off to the split ring completly blowing apart. I was using Bucher Super Split rings. Maybe I had a bad bunch, I really dont know, but have never had problem with stringease snaps. I think its really a matter of personall prefrence, but the main thing is to check them often and replace as you see fit.

| Hey Toe - just make yer own, lazybone. I've now boated 3 upper 30"s muskies and a 36" pike using homemade florocarbon leaders. I'm so very pleased with their performance. They are easy to make. The fish would have kinked up wire, even sevenstrand, but the floro is jut like new.
The only thing I'n not using floro for is an Undertaker which still works best with a 6-8" single strand 90# wire leader.
My best quality leaders are made with "small" Stringease snaps (150#?) and 130# Spro Power Swivels. Esox Maniac has some new snaps, "Dukes" I think they're called, that are a step beyond Stringease.
Sheeet, I'll make you some for free when I next stock up on materials. I want to try 50# floro now. |
