Posts: 44 | Seeing all of these first time muskies really had me feeling nostalgic. My six year old son, CJ, boated his first musky on July 4th (this summer). He was casting a micro dawg right up to weed edge. I was lucky enough to see the fish as it hit on the pause right at the side of the boat. He handled it like a pro - kept good tension and didn't stop reeling until the fish hit the bottom of the bag. The fish measured 35 inches - quite a fish for a six year old casting his own musky bait. CJ caught his second fish just about a month ago (still only six years old). We were casting and dragging suckers when, all of the sudden, I heard the sound of the clicker. Truth be told, he might have actually heard it before me. He got really excited and I immediately turned the boat around to assess the situation. After confirming that it was a fish (not weeds, a twisted sucker, or a snag), I turned down the drag and handed him the rod. I knew that the fish was nice because I was able to get a look at it before handing him the rod. I asked him if he knew what to do. His response was perfect, "keep reeling until you tell me to stop or the fish is in the net." He was ready... I helped him drive the hooks home and then let him take over from there. I actually did hold the back of his life jacket (just to make sure that he wasn't pulled in). It was a relatively short, but chaotic, 30-45 second fight. At the end of it all, he had caught and released a 43 inch tiger musky. I immediately let him know that he had caught a bigger tiger musky than I ever had. I have never seen a smile like the one he had on his face. In fact, I don't think that he stopped smiling that whole day (or the next). A closer examination of the picture revealed that I had caught that tiger several years back (it was about 41 inches at that time) in the exact same spot and nearly the exact same day of the year. Thus, I was able to talk with CJ and stress the importance of catch and release. I made it clear that if I had kept that musky back then (which would have been legal), he would never had been able to catch it - and beat my personal best tiger musky. It seemed to really click for him. I am both happy and saddened to say that he caught the bug. Happy because I know that we will have countless days ahead to share on the water. Sad because I know that it is an itch that can never really be scratched. So goes the life of a musky hunter. I have attached a picture of the 43 incher. I don't have a picture of the 35 incher on my computer. I will add it later if I have time. Attachments ---------------- CJs 43 inch tiger pic_4.jpg (54KB - 319 downloads)

Posts: 44 | What is up with the small maximum allowable size for an attachment? The picture that I wanted to attach is way over the 200K maximum. How do you guys get around that? Thank you!

Posts: 386 | Great story! I can't wait for my son to come with me. He's two so for now we stick with the lake 5 minutes down the road and catch a few sunnies. His patience only lasts for about an hour at this point. Life jackets for toddlers look about as comfortable as a straight jacket. Looking forward to the pics.

Location: Sawyer County, WI | MTJ - 10/29/2015 2:12 PM very pretty fish, what's going on with the gills there? does he have his arm all the way though? i can't quite figure it out It looks like a gloved hand (must have borrowed the blue glove from Todd !) and a leech lake lip lock. Beautiful fish. Congrats to you and your son !

Posts: 44 | No. I was originally trying to have him hold it by the gill plate (like we all do). But that didn't work - too heavy for him. So he slid his hand out (for the most part) and just grabbed it as best as he could. The glove that he used was way too big (we couldn't locate his smaller glove). Rather than take more time and re-position his hand and the fish, I just snapped a picture and then released the fish. I figured, "Why keep the fish out of the water longer than necessary? The damage is done. Just get the fish back in the water." Edited by fin_prof 10/29/2015 5:23 PM

Everyone forgets that a six year old is not an expert at holding muskies. He knows what to do - he sees me do it enough - but the fish was just too big.

Posts: 44 | Thanks Steve! I just got back in town but I can't wait to show him the front page tomorrow. I also have to obviously call his grandparents and aunts and uncles to have them check it out. Thanks again - it is truly appreciated! I can't even imagine what his reaction will be.
