my whole set up got dropped (and thankfully recovered) in the lake...the reel is new but do I need to do anything other than let it dry out? I opened the grease ports so it can get more air to help the internals dry but should I be concerned about anything else? It was only submerged a few seconds. Thanks and sorry for the stupid question!

I would tear it down and clean it. It's probably not going to hurt anything if you leave it, but new reels come with every internal part coated with grease. A good flushing like you gave it will assure that the grease is everywhere. Like I said, you won't ruin it, but only stuff with teeth (i.e. gears) should get any grease. The rest should have just a small bit of oil.

When the inside of the reel gets all gooped up with grease, that's when drags start slipping, thumb bars start sticking, and stuff tends to not engage all the way.

Better return the reel to the way it was. If you have a warranty issue and send it in and they can tell it was submerged they may tell you to go fly a kite.

Return it if you have the receipt and then get a new one. Probably what i would do.

oil the bearings ASAP and do a full tear down on the reel. If not, you will be sorry very shortly.

I had a Daiwa trolling reel fall in the lake a couple years ago. Still going strong with nothing done to it.

Don't the saltwater guys turn a hose on their reels when they come ashore. I've fished through some frog chokers that I'm sure got the reels every bit as wet as a quick dunking. Being lazy my inclination would be to do NOTHING but it's your reel not mine.

Yup...after every day of salt fishing we spray down EVERYTHING with the hose. A good rinse and your good. If it was sitting water for just a bit you should be fine

fresh water? just keep on fishing -- RyanJoz's extreme concern makes no sense, unless he's referring to salt water.

Coming from Texas - yes a freshwater rinse every time. I've still had to replace my bearings every other season. I believe that to be due more to the salt content of the water than to actually being wet.

So in my mind I'd just keep fishing it for the season and when things ice over give it a good cleaning.

heck i've been out in soaking all day downpours and i know all the reels i had on deck were soaked inside and out, and it had to be as bad as a quick dunk in the drink. if it didn't come in contact with the bottom to get grit into it i'd just open it up to get the standing water out let it air dry and just keep on fishing. if that reel couldn't take that quick dunk i'd switch brands.

^ what he said. The old manual for C3's actually advised you to dunk your reel into the water before every use.

Many reel manuals tell you to rinse your reel with fresh water, especially after using in salt water fishing. I wouldn't worry about it beyond opening up the easy parts to open and letting it air dry.

Same here. They didn't sound like a car wreck every cast after the dunk. Still working fine, and they're probably 8-9 years old.

Tony Grant taught me to dunk my reels in the water to remove ice buildup.

My rod and Abu Garcia Revo Winch went into LOTW a few years back. Casting for 2 days and finally got it back. Opened it up and there was not a drop of water in the reel. Oiled it and worked like new!

You really don't have much to worry about. I am a salt guy and we rinse in fresh and think we have done our reels a favor.

However, reels designed for salt use have many anti-corrosion features that straight freshwater reels don't so they handle fresh like its nothing.

I would open the reel and oil the bearings (this will displace any water inside then) and re-grease the gears. As long as plenty of that is on all moving parts you have nothing to worry about. If not, then even fresh has enough trace metals in it to promote corrosion.
