Anyone ever fish on the soo? Is it safe to venture out onto in a big musky boat or do you need a charter size boat?

It's not bad. I've been there working with a couple walleye tournaments, and it was no problem. Lake George....

shhhhhh...

Lotsa little sweet eating salmon there. Cute little fellers that taste like a form of magic.

Lake Superior State University has a live underwater cam to watch those fish swim by.

Not much happening now but at certain times of the year they are stacked in there. http://www.lssu.edu/arl/fishcam.php

I lived in the Soo for 7 years. We only had a 14ft aluminum boat we got for free with no electronics and a ratchet strap to keep it from breaking in half, so you should be OK. I did not get the musky bug until right at the end of my stay so I cant help much there, but If you want any salmon fishing spots and techniques let me know, we pretty much had that down pat on the river. The perch above the locks can be absolutely ridiculous as well. The spot we always heard about and tried a few times for muskies was munuskong bay, which is down river of Lake George.

I live 15 min south of the Soo and fish Munuscong Lake on the St Marys River this time of year when the weather permits. I own a 16 ft Smoker Craft that has a semi V hull and the wind/waves keep me from fishing quite a bit. If you have a deep V you should not have any problem. The fall back on thoses days is the Tahquamenon River, a pretty good numbers river and only an hour away. If you have any more questions about the area or the river just pm me.
