This weed grows rampant in my lake..I always thought it was Milfoil...someone told me different.....what is it exactly??

This weed gets a seed head that comes to the surface around mid-June, then pretty much dissapears after that...my problem is with teh local lake association cuting these before they go to seed, then they just get thicker and thicker and thicker...

I'm looking for a good arsenal to approach them with to show them that if they would just park the friggen cutters for a while...it would go away.

Does anyone know anymore or anything different about this weed??

tyhx much.

p.s. NO I don't know how it smokes hehheh

Greg, go to www.psychoherb.com...there you find this plant and many other "medicinal" weeds for your viewing pleasure!;) Actually, we have the same stuff in some of the lakes here also, which is referred to as salad. Not sure of the technical name, but start calling it a name that YOU make up, and no doubt others will soon be calling it that too; before long you have classified a plant that you yourself have coined. Now start a post to "name that weed"...:O

That looks like a thin leaf cabbage,  (North American Pondweed). Definitely a vegetation to leave alone, it is great for the fish and the system.

No doubt the weed photos were pirated from the UVA web site, as they are farther advanced than Va. Tech!

Hi,

It looks similar to the stuff in a lake I fish. It shows up in the spring and seems to thin out around July. It grows in water from 12-16 feet. The fish really seem to love it during June. It is so thick that I can't run a aqua-vu through it sometimes. After it thins out, the fish move to the thick cabbage in 8-12 feet.

As per Sworrall - it looks like N. American Pondweed. Curly leaf pondweed usually has more leaf stems in the top and was considered the most invasive nuisance weed in the Midwest until Eurasion Milfoil came along.

Our lake had divers remove it when it was found.

Too bad that stuff cannot displace euroasion millfoil.

I knew right away it was not millfoil for the simple fact that when i seen the posted pics, it did not stick to my computer. Millfoil would have done that.

Is there a good book out that shows pics and explains more about water plants?

I've always wanted to learn more about the weeds I see when fishing.

I have to believe it is Curly Leaf, not North American Pondweed.

I did a yahoo search on Curly.....http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=curlyleaf+pondweed&ei=UTF-8

got tons of info...I didn't find N.AMerican

I fish a lake that is full of that stuff and has no milfoil. Its already on the surface. Too bad they put weed killer in the lake and kill it all. That really hurts the fishing.

In my opinion there are three kinds of weed musky fishermen need to worry about. Cabbage, Coon Tail and Junk Weed.

Cabbage and Coon Tail GOOD, Junk Weed bad. I would call the weed you posted cabbage. Though it is probably curly leaf pond weed.

MR Roberts, junk weed can be good. Two years ago we has that nasty hot spell with two weeks of temps around 100. That bloomed some of the lakes bad and a lake I fished labor day, that bloom killed the all cabbage. All that was left alive was the junk weed and the fish were there.

Whatever kind of pond weed it turns out to be, I don't think it should be sprayed. I've seen too many lake associations spray unwanted vegitation just to kill off healthy cabbage beds as well.
Leave the decissions of lake management to biologists, not to public opinion.

It is, without a doubt, Curly Leaf PondWeed. Spent many seasons studying this stuff. Always grows big time in May and usually dies off in June sometime.

If I remember right (its been a while) the leaf margins or edges should be finely serrated. The picture isn't close enought to show this.
