OK - enough of the laughs. If this works out I can only imagine the snickers and finger-pointing I will get.

I picked up a St. Croix SPINNING rod, dirt cheap. Rated 3/4 to 2 oz. It will fill in a gap with my rods quite nicely for those smaller 1 oz lures.

Now my question. It's a SPINNING rod. What would happen if I turned it upside down and put on a baitcasting reel. Besides the obvious answer of "just try it", what do you think?

...and yes - this is a real question.

Remember the Seinfeld where Kramer gets novocaine and everyone assumes he's challenged and he gets serenaded by the Velvet Fog Mel Torme?
It will be like that.
Seriously, though, it will suck with those long framed guides. Rewrap the first 3 from the butt and you'll be fine.

As a rod builder, I would put a spinning reel on it as St Croix designed it for.

I do believe that there is a different construction of the blank in casting vs. spinning rods. I could be wrong, but IIRC, rods have a natural taper, or bend to them. This determines where the eyes are placed on the blank. For best performance I would stick with a spinning reel, but much like putting a different size tire on a car, it will still roll.

I would sell the spinning rod and get the proper rod, or buy a spinning reel to go with it. Plenty of guys toss lighter muskie gear with spinning rods.

It should be fine as the guide spacing on the spinning rod (blank) is comparable to that of the casting rod..it just doesn't look cool to use it that way

put a good 4000 series spinning reel on it ... lots of applications for spinning gear muskie fishing!
