Heading up north next Monday 31 Aug for my first trip to LotW. I will be staying at Hanson's King Island for 8 days.  My partner had to cancel a couple of weeks ago but has fished the area for 20 years and marked a chart for me. Unfortunately a guide is not in the budget as I expected to have someone very familiar with the area. I have been fishing for Musky's for the last 3 seasons and will be fishing out of a 16' Smokercraft.  The trip was supposed to be two couples now I am fishing solo. My PB is 44.5in and I mainly fish a river with pretty good numbers but most fish are in the mid 30's range. I guess I am looking for any last minute tips or what I should set for realistic expectations for the trip?

I would focus on main lake rock humps. Buck tails, Twitch baits, shallow pounders all work great.

You are staying in the right part of Sab for your boat size. All sorts of good water available over that way. I have mostly fished further west but we found plenty of fish the one day I fished within 5 miles of kings.

It's LOTW so focus on rock points/reefs/saddles and other quality structures. Since you are by yourself it might be a little tougher deciding if they want a topwater, a bucktail, a crank, or a jerk bait but you will need to try all those bait families at different times. If the fish are up and cranking or moving clip on a bucktail and GO. If they seem to be off jerkbaits are crashing cranks into the rocks might get you more action. Just gotta mix it up the best you can by yourself.

Might be some bloom to deal with but just move around to find suitable water. You have a marked chart so location wise you already have good knowledge to build on. Just go fish! If it was my 1st trip to shield waters and fishing by myself I would want to average 1 fish a day in the net for the trip. Hopefully you can get them figured out better and average closer to 2 fish in the net per day for the balance of the trip. Might be a skunk or 2 but being there for 8 days you will have a chance at a 4-5+ fish day.

Enjoy the trip! Sab is a blast!

Dafterzip,

NickD provides good info. But don't get frustrated if you are not putting fish in the boat. I've been fishing LOTW for 15 years and have amazing weeks where the fish seem to be everywhere and I've had weeks where there doesn't seem to be a musky in the lake. Weather has a lot to do with it.

If you get frustrated, remember to just keep fishing and keep your bait in the water. Even on the slowest of slow days out there, I keep telling myself ... IT ONLY TAKES ONE CAST !!!

I'll be up there the same time. You'll likely see me fishing the Hanson's beach. You've got a million spots nearly within sight of the island. Every island, rock, and small patch of weeds is likely to hold fish. Just don't catch them all before I get a shot too.

My group of 5 just returned last night from Tamarack Island Wilderness Lodge, which is west of your resort. The weather was the deciding factor for the first 2 1/2 days. Wind howling at 20-30 MPH plus heavy rain made it hard to find active fish. A few lazy follows and 2 missed in the figure 8. The sky cleared Monday night and the wind died and the fish lit up for 2 hours. 2 more missed opportunities in the figure 8 and one fat 38" crushed a topwater and another missed strike a few minutes later. Landed a fat 46" early Tuesday morning on a Spanky 10. All of these active fish were in 2-3 feet of water. The water temp was 58-60 degrees.

My recommendation: cast to shallow rock edges and weed edges with bucktails and top water baits. Even if the weather and the fish don't cooperate, stay positive and fish hard and it will pay off.

Can't say enough good things about Todd and Kim at Tamarack. They took awesome care of us!
