Who makes the sharpest hook out of the box? I know that hooks should be sharpened by hand, but I continue to ruin a lot of them while trying to learn how to properly sharpen and when I don't ruin them, I'm not convinced that I have gotten them any sharper then they were out of the box. So until I can consistantly sharpen hooks, I'm looking for a hook that I can use on my baits while I practice on cheaper ones.

Are there any thoughts on the Eagle Claw 374 "lazer sharpened" hooks? I've picked up a few as replacements since they come in packs of 5, but with the curved point I'm not even sure how to begin sharpening them.

Musky Innovations makes hooks that are 'plasma point' chemically sharpened and they seem to be pretty decent straight out of the box.

Is there a particular model for the gamas or VMCs?

For VMC I like 8650 and I think the Gamakatsu is 23RB.

There are hooks that don't need sharpened. None of them are just bronze. There are some black nickel hooks out there that you could not make any sharper.

It seems they only go up to 5/0 for super sharp hooks, any source for 6 and 7 that come int he black nickel?

Agree with this, the doggone hooks on new Suicks are deadly. Can't touch the bait without sticking myself....

so if it's a black nickle hook does that mean it can't/shouldn't be sharpened by hand or just that they tend to be sharper out of the package?

the only thing you can do to a Gamakatsu hook is screw it up. their laser is more accurate the your file ...

Check out Mustad TG90-BN  6/0  3x extra strong triple grip.  They have a different shape to them, but I actually prefer that shape to traditional round bend. You will have to sharpen them, tho, but all you have to do to get them sharp is touch the file to them so the black nickel finish is off. You barely have to touch the file to scrape off the B/N finish.

for hooks that do need to be sharpened kissing the point vs. attacking it is the secret ... like everything in life, too much is too much.

I still use Eagle Claw laser sharps for all of my bucktails - and I don't sharpen them out of the box. IMO - the best option out there for the price.
Tough to learn how to sharpen hooks but like Sled said - take it easy on the point and don't roll it over. A few strokes of the file is all it needs most of the time.

Owner hooks the same kind that are on shadzillas are insanely sharp. I also have smaller owners my dad uses for salmon on my small twitch baits and not one fish has been able to shale free from those

It is insane how sharp the hooks are on suicks. I have some that are from 1980 and for being 35 years old it's amazing how sharp they are. I was just looking at the hooks on one that I've been using all year which I have yet to touch with a file and I know for a fact this suick is more than 20 years old and doesn't look like a file has ever touched these hooks, I could be wrong but would love to buy some hooks from them.

Never hurts to politely ask. They're very good folks to talk with! Might want to keep your results private b/c they could just do "you" that favor...tell them that too.
