I fish in northern IL where the water is rather dirty, what color would you go with for this situation?

No prob! Thats what Dave at Daves bait and tackle in Crystal Lake recommended to me. I see tons of stuff in the water nobody else does.

Now, I am a little confused, there is an amber lens, and there is a green mirror lens. Did you mean to say Amber or Green Mirror? I only saw those as two different colors on their site.

My 580 glass lens is a green mirror copper base. NOT amber. I don't know if they do make amber green mirror but I am guessing they would be too bright for sunny days?

The copper or amber is the base color. The color you see through when you look through the lens. The Green Mirror, Blue Mirror, Silver Mirror is a reflective coating on the outside that reflects certain colors. Like Green Mirror has copper or amber base, silver mirror has copper base, blue mirror has grey base. Blue blocks out harsh light, silver does a little less, and so on. I just bought a pair of silver mirror (copper base) and love them. The copper brings out contrast on low light conditions like morning, evening, cloudy days, and the silver mirror blocks some reflective light but not as much as blue mirror, which is the most for like open water ocean blue sky days. If you are on the water in bright conditions blue mirror may be what you want. Otherwise green mirror or silver mirror will be great for bringing out the contrast in the water.

Here's a link to Costa's site w/ descriptions so you can do some research.

+1 on 580g green mirror (they have a copper base)

work well in that dirty northern illinois water. work well just about anywhere as far as i am concerned. Good high contrast lenses.

The green mirror glass lens for sure. I primarily fish stained water here in wi and got to borrow a friends blue mirror, swapped back to my green mirror very quickly.

I love Costa glasses and I have done some research on this topic, also I have called Costa Del Mar reps to chat several times to get their take. Additionally, I own several pairs of the glasses with different lenses, and I use them situationally based on the factory reps recommendations. Next thing is I only buy the glass lenses as I feel they perform better and dont scratch.

For stained fresh water, which is common in Florida back waters where Costa is based out of and resembles tannic waters of Wisconsin/Ontario they recommended to me Silver Mirror Copper Base lenses 580 Glass.

For inshore salt water they recommended the green lens 580g

and for off shore fishing they recommend blue lenses 580G

The copper and green lenses let in a lot more light than the blue lenses, which is one of the reasons they perform well seeking structure and fish in dark water conditions. The blue lens is designed for the high intensity sun reflecting off of the water.

Additionally, I was told that whatever color lens you use, that same color will be more apt to show up through the glasses. So in the case of a musky that has a typically brownish back, you might want to get a lens that most closely resembles that color. Copper being close to brown.

So my answer is Silver Mirror copper lens for tannic stained fresh water. that being said, I had to get the green and blue for trips to florida because gear is almost as fun as actually catching the fish.
