Getting a Ranger 619. I am currently thinking of putting a 200 merc optimax on it. I am looking for imput. Good, bad, other options. Thanks.

I had a 200 Opti on my Tuffy 1990 last year, and a 225 Opti on my 1990 Esox deep V this year, with no problems and great overall performance.

Have heard about nothing but problems with the optimax motors. Most complaints have come from guys in kentucky who put more hours on their boats in a year than us wisconsinites could in five. If you plan on trolling bring a new set of plugs, as you will ruin the ones you have. Also a new brain box (I don't know the technical term) will cost you a nice chunk of change. I am a big fan of mercs, and in fact between my dad and myself have four of them, but I think the optimax technology was forced out the door without proper testing, and mercury's reputation is paying the price.

Telling folks to stay away from the Opti is like telling them to stay away from anything 'new'...I have LOTS of hours on mine with no problems at all, as do quite a few of my associates. Over the years, I have seen EFI, Black Max, Ficht, HPDI, and all branded 4 strokes with blown powerheads; that is why the motor carries a warranty!

The problems I have seen at the dealerships were dealt with by a product recall by Mercury, and were ECM ( brain box) and fuel rail related, causing fouling and carbon build-up, and related problems.

The 200 and 225 should be fine, and reflect Mercury's quality committment with a solid warranty.

I have been Running a 225 Opti, same motor as a 200 Opti, just bigger cylinders.. It has only seen the shop once, and that was when it was rigged..

Awesome Motor, quiet and powerfull.

Havent ordered yet. I do know that the 2002 200hp optimax went up $1000. According to the dealer the big jump was a result of and fixing the powerhead problems.

Try again at the Mercury Dealer and ask about the recent price reduction and extra 2 years warranty![8)]

The price info I got was from the Ranger dealer in the area. I'll check into the info on prices and warranty though. Thanks Steve.

I ran a 200 HPDI Yamaha since last spring. It's been a very suprizing motor, just turn the key and go. Altho it's a smaller diplacment motor than the 3.1 EFI, after some fine tuning on the whole rig, my 2000 1990 Osprey would run 55, 56 loaded and up to 58 by myself gps. The Yamaha HPDI is quieter than an Optimax even at idle. When I was along side a guy with an Opti, you couldn't hear my HPDI was running and when I ran with a buddy of mine in his Ranger 619 with the 200 Opti, when we got to the gas pumps, I used several gallons less for about the same running time. The Yamaha HPDI is the only motor in a lot of years to impress me.

I ran a 200 Opti last year, no problems. Ran a 225 EFI this year due to a spring Opti shortage. No Problems. Take care of them and they will treat you well.

They are both good motors.I was really surprised at the gas mileage of the EFI, much better than expected.

From what I understand, the key to the opti is breaking them in properly. If you follow, to a T, the recommendations for the break-in period, they have very few problems.
