Posts: 174 Location: Naperville, IL | This is for an all use, no 10s or pounder set up. This will be my only set up so it much do all things well, but mainly, 8s&9s, small cranks ( 5-8" ) also. What are your thoughts?

Posts: 1283 | NACL 50 6.4. Its a light and fast set up that will do everything you mentioned with flying colors. 9s might get a bit tiring after a full day but doable. If you would be primarily fishing 9s and larger cranks Id go with the NACL 60 5.4.

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | The only thing I don't like with the 400 D is you have to take the reel apart to change the breaks. And if I was only going to have the one set up I take a a reel that's easer to change when switching between light and heavy baits.

he means for adjusting them. not replacing them. I personally have by 401D set to whatever is stock and never really feel the need to adjust it. I've had 0 problems with my 401D and thumb bar issues on every toro I have. both great reels. pick your poison.

I have and use both and like both. There is no question Shimano is far more durable than the other popular brand.

Posts: 992 | I also have both and each have their pros and cons...I still give a slight edge to the revos though despite the common thumb bar issues.

Posts: 156 | Not going to get into a debate on this, but I started with Shimano...was talked into multiple "other popular brand" reels...never liked any of them. Sold them all at a loss...and added 4 more Shimanos. They each have their fans, and i have really wanted to like the "other popular brand"...but I just don't like the quality, feel, designs, etc. I'll never buy anything other than a Shimano going forward...

Do you ever question your opinion when there are thousands of other people that have great results with "the other popular brand"? Not when the performance between the two is night and day. I admit, I am very hard on my reels. I am always ripping and jerking baits. Don't throw bucktails alot. I have torn the handles off the other brand, anti reverses too and on the first time used. Another thing, look what brand comes out with new reels all the time and what brand has alot of reels in closeout. There are your answers.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | Go with a 400D and you won't have to worry about a sticky thumb bar or the reel sounding like a coffee grinder after a year. I'm on year three with my 400d and still going strong. Most people who prefer the other popular brands have probably never used a high end Shimano. I have never had to adjust the brakes and I throw everything 1.5 oz bucktails to 12 oz plastics on it. Shop around online, I got mine for $270 brand new- PM me for a link.

Posts: 1283 | Round reels are great if you like them. Personally I don't. I had a tranx and still have a couple Curados. The tranx was literally a tank and felt totally over kill and heavy. The Curado is a great reel that I feel is way more work when getting into blades and 8" baits. BTW you got that sling blade yet?

Posts: 1100 | I have to say i'm able to service my own reel on a regular basis, If i wasn't i would go with a Tranx or a 400D, and that's the 2 reels i use on my own sling blade. I use a Toro on a "the jerk" and find it a bit more comfortable in the hands but it has required more maintains then the D and the Tranx.

I have yet to own a nice Shimano so I can't intelligently compare them.
