Whats your technique when fish breach the water with the shakes? I know it happens fast but i caught one the other day that came out trying to shake the bait and I kept cranking the reel through the shake allowing me to bring the rod so it was mostly under water to prevent another breach. Is this the norm for you guys to do or is there a better way? If I lose one, it often is when it has the head shakes.

If the line is coming up, I bury the rod and REEL REEL REEL!

Keep the pressure on the fish, make sure drag is set a little light, don't bend rod down and slowly bring the fish in is what I do.

Just say "yeah'!!!!! This is about fun not possession,I hope every musky I hook jumps. We really don't want them to fight like northern do we? stay deep with headshakes. My perfect fight is three good jumps a couple of drag ripping runs and I'd love it if they threw the hooks at the side of the boat so I don't have to mess with em. Only time I'd worry about the picture is in a tournament otherwise let em jump !

Rod tip.down. If I am interested in a bunch of lure tossing jumps, I will fish steelhead.

Just out of curiosity????when you guys hook a fish after hours maybe days do you want it to be over has fast has possible, 5 seconds if doable,,bottom line "get the picture"

I want the fish in the net, and I want it to release well - even if I'm not taking a picture. For me and my musky fighting style, that usually means a pretty good amount of pressure on the fish and generally a fairly fast fight but not necessarily horsing them in.

That said, 'ya gotta know when to freespool and let them go too. If a fish gets the upper hand and turns straight away, that is not a good time to put pressure on them in my experience.

We'd rather put one in the net than get two follows, right? In my mind it isn't caught unless I net it or unhook it, and I am out to catch fish.

My most vivid memories are of the biggies that completely cleared water. Theres nothing more majestic than a 45" plus completely airborne. Landed most of them too.

Same here want the fish in the net. Yes it is cool to see them jump. It is it cool when they toss the lure. I have lost a few muskies, many smallmouth and at least half my steelhead I have hooked this way. Fish have the upper hand. I see it at losing the battle.

I too want em in the net. Sure is fun to see them get air but that can be a heartbreaker. If I can tell how good they are hooked, or how they hit the bait, it will determine how long I play them.

My own answer to my question, for me the victory is when the fish strikes the bait if he's hooked I fooled him I talked him into it despite all the pressure that's been put on him. "I see the fight has the premium E ticket ride at the amusement park you pay extra for the 200 ft roller coaster or the double ferris wheel I don't want it over in 20 seconds. usually when the ride slows down at the end you hear people go "ohoooooooo it's over" I've been casting for hours or days when it does happen I Dont want to miss or sacrifice the fun NOW for the sake of having a picture memory. Not advocating playing them to exhaustion but let them be muskies not calfs in a rodeo competition trying to rope em up in seconds.

For me it has to be in the net to count. If I counted all the hooked fish that got off this year alone I would look like a pro. lol

With that said I took out my best friend and his 14 year old son last Friday for his first muskie trip. He fished hard for 10 hours straight and right in the last 10 minutes he finally nails one. Gets it all the way to the boat and it makes a last couple runs and breaks is line(30# Spiderwire on his spinning reel since he did not want to use my gear). I tell him he caught it just didnt get the pic.

Lost one years ago that wouldn't stay in the water from the time I hooked it. The final jump was boat side on short line. Tail walked it's way off the lure. That one left a mark.
