I absolutely love throwing spinnerbaits, I toss them more than bucktails. There are so many kinds to chose from with different blades, skirts, weights. They are very versatile in all seasons and types of cover, they really stand out bumping timber and in the reeds, I fish a lot of dark water so I like spinners with big Colorado blades in hot colors that really thump in the water. Violent Strike, Shumway, Rad Dog are some of the brands I throw but there are many more and some excellent homemade ones out there.

Love them! My favorite time to use them is when its time to slop it up in the tough stuff where not many will go. My favorites are VooDoo Tails.

I agree. Spinnerbaits are great. I throw them much more than bucktails. I cant wait to try out the Pearson Grinders that I picked up. They look great.

I too like spinnerbaits. I use them a little less then some guys but last year while guiding they were a go to lure for me. I would throw them off of the deep side and drag them across the bottom. I picked up a few fish that I don't think I other wise would have caught.

I also love to use them in the weeds. I prefer a "lift and fall" retrieve in the weeds. My favorites are the Pearson Grinder and the Rad Dog. God bless.

They will go through just about anything! Even the smaller ones have a pretty good size presence. I've been adding teaser tails (plastic) to most of mine. Is anyone else doing this? White spinnerbaits are popular with the fish.

Wow,

Thanks for the encouraging responses. I'm still a novice and just started using thespinnerbaits this year. I get a lot of follows but very few strikes. I was starting to think that something about the profile or action wasn't inciting a strike. Any sugestions on what to do at the end of the retrieve? I already do the wide figure eight religiously.

Try adding a twister or shad type tail to the bait if it doesn't already have one.

keep tossing them. when they hook up the single hook will go deeper than a treble for good hook up %. Still better be razor sharp however.
I have also added a single trailer hook to a 1/2 ozer with a teaser tail on it. Makes a small light spinner bait a little larger without adding much weight. I'll be trying it tomorrow.

Most spinnerbaits I've seen, the wire angles as it comes out of the weight, do musky not straighten this out? Seems like you'd be lucky to get 2-3 fish out of a single lure before it was too bent up. I really have no idea.. Just curious about the life expectancy.

if the wire is good quality stainless, and not too light, a Spinnerbait will last through a bunch of fish. Watch at the lead for a dull spot in the wire where the wire is obviously stressed. If it looks shot, it probably is.

I throw them alot in the heavy cover and wood, and do really well with them. I use the Violent Strike Magnum for muskies with a 7/0 main and a 7/0 trailer.

For waters where I am targeting Pike and Bass as well as Muskie, I use he next size down, with 5/0 hooks. Both hook up well, and hold the fish well.

If I am out to catch some Muskies in the Lilly Pads, especially the dollar pads that are so tough to fish through, I use the 4/0 model. Those work really well, and I have caught some pigs on the Goon tossing them in the junk.

Here is a picture of a relativly new spinnerbait compared to one that has caught close to 20 fish including a few over 50 inches. You will see the blades are full of teeth marks as well as the hair been trimmed way down. One thing the picture won't show is the way the wire wares lose around the lead after so much abuse but with strong wire when it does get bent out of shape you just bent it back straight. I sure got my $20 worth out of that one.

The baits definatly have to be built solid if you going after big fish thats all. That lure is responsible for Zach's 53 incher last August.

As prevous post stated spinnerbaits rock. Two of my best musky action spinnerbaits are one Marv's Regular size musky spinnerbait black with gold blades and the other is Northland I belive 5/8 oz. Tandem copper blades with crawdad type color skirt that at times you can find for the high cost of three for ten dollars. These baits have worked for me from musky lakes of Kentucky to the great Lake of The Woods in Canada. Good Fishing, Al

You are getting lots of quality advice and support from the previous posts. You can use
them throughout the season. I take grief from people, but as an old trout
fisherman, I use finesse techniques at certain times of the year. However,
there are many great musky spinnerbaits I use with steel leaders. My personal preference
is for Marv's spinnerbaits. I really like the way they look and work.

It's weird because I love to throw spinnerbaits for muskys but hate throwing them for bass {probably because they are so overused by casual bass fisherman} I really like the black body with orange blades for skis and pike. Frog colors are great to. You can throw them all year!!

I have used them for years. My personal favorite is the Bass sized Mama Bait by Hawg Wild in Altoona Wi. and the Musky sized one they also make, the Musky Mugger. They are light wire when compared to Marv's and some others but the wire adds to the ation with these, giving the bait extra vibration. Yeah, they might only last 3 or so fish but they are worth it.
