Subject: Marking Waypoints from Side Imaging

I'm experiencing a problem while trying to mark waypoints from the side imaging screen. This is with a Humminbird Helix 5 SI/GPS but I suspect the issue is the same for other units.

While moving in reverse (back-trolling), if I see something off to the side, I use the cursor arrows to move my cursor to the thing (rocks, fish, weeds, etc) and enter a waypoint. The waypoint gets placed on the WRONG side of my route line.

Example: I see rocks 60' off to the starboard side. I use the arrows to move my cursor on the SI screen over to the rocks on the RIGHT HAND side of my screen and mark a waypoint. That waypoint then shows up on the WRONG side of my route line on the chart. It places the waypoint on the starboard side of the BOAT ICON, which has the bow of the icon pointing in the direction of actual travel, which is obviously not the case when moving in reverse.

As far as I can tell it's a programming issue that assumes the boat is always traveling forward, so the starboard side of the transducer correlates to the right-hand side of the boat icon, or 90 degrees clockwise from the trajectory arrow on the chart, while the port side of the transducer correlates to 270 degrees clockwise from the trajectory arrow.

Has anyone faced this issue? Has anyone figured out a remedy? Humminbird Service has not helped in two email attempts. I don't fault them yet, since it's hard to explain and harder to wrap your head around. Next step is to try a phone call with them.

Thanks for your time.

Isn't there a "Flip left/right" function like on Lowrance that would help when you go the "wrong way"?
(haven't tried it on mine so its a guess)

Not that I know of, but I'll look into it. Thanks!

No one else has experienced this?

Would someone do me a big favor and experiment with this next time you're out? go in reverse and from the SI screen, mark a waypoint off to the side, then check on the chart to see if it marked it on the correct side. I'm curious to see if it's just me, or a universal h'bird issue. Their tech support just said that shouldn't be happening.

Thanks man. I need to make sure my software is up-to-date. Gotta think it is, being that it's a brand new unit.

Just because it's new does not mean you have the latest soft wear. I would make that a priority.

Well I feel technologically inept... Couldn't figure out where to see the software version. Looked through all the menus, didn't find it. Humminbird's website says "After the unit has stopped loading, press the menu button for start up options. Using your four way cursor button, scroll down and select System Status using the right cursor. This will pull up a screen showing the Software Version number in the middle of the screen." I couldn't find "System Status" in the menus. What am I missing?

It's when you very first turn it on watch the screen it will say.

Normal.
Simulator.
System status.

If I'm understanding you correctly I think you may be turned around yourself. GPS by its inherent design doesn't know which way the front of your boat is. It only knows direction of travel which always assumes that that is the front of your boat.

Exactly. That's why it places the waypoint on the wrong side of your route on the chart when you're moving in reverse. The transducer and side imaging display DO know port side from starboard side.

Are you saying that the software can't possibly place the waypoint in the correct location when moving in reverse?

The more I think about it, the more I think the current technology can't get that situation properly recorded. Shoot.

Check your settings for your course heading and maybe switch it, you can choose either 'course up' or 'North up'. I may not have the exact terms correct in the menu but it is close to that, I am also not familiar with your particular unit. Those selections orient the GPS map on you screen to either rotate with your direction or travel so whatever direction you are traveling is at the top of the screen or the map stays static with North always at the top of the screen regardless of your direction of travel. I am not sure but I think this setting could affect what side a waypoint would show up on when backtrolling?

I know what you're talking about but I don't think it will have any effect. I'll try it though.

Worst case, you might have to mark the opposite side?? As close as you can?

Lowrance has the Point antenna, that points the gps so it knows what way the front is. I don't know if H.bird has anything similar but that should fix the issue.
