I have a 92 Merc tiller engine. I just put my boat in for a week vacation and I hit the tilt down switch and it only goes down about a half inch and stops. The tilt sounds like it's running but it only goes a down a half inch. I hit the switch again and it goes down a half inch. It goes up fine. What's going on? Easy fix or am I screwed? Thanks.

Might be the trim relay. Should have one for up and one for down. You might google it and see what the part looks like to help find it on your motor. I have a new mercury and it is close to where the bottom of the cowl fits on the motor. When I bought mine the service guy showing me the motor said the relays are the same so you can use one to test the other or if your at the ramp and it's stuck down. If that's it hopefully you can find one and get it fixed. I don't think they are costly just might be tough to find in time to save your vacation. Good luck

Silly question but it's not the motor support is it? You know the bracket that flips down for trailering? Someone might have flipped it without you knowing. Check the easy things first.

My Merc t&t wouldn't go down and I had to rebuild the cylinder. Lots of O rings.
You could loosen the release valve until it goes down then tighten and try again.
Check fluid before that though. See if there is a lot of air bubbles.
I had to finish up a trip with the motor in one position because it wouldn't go down.
Just used the release valve to get it where I could run OK.

Good Luck

Def make sure it's not this /\....I could be wrong but I think if the relay switch is shot you won't any power/noise at all if you go down...

If the relay is bad what ever is cracked or burnt in the relay could still make contact for a brief second until the heat from the amperage passing thru it causes it to separate again breaking the circuit. I believe this is sometimes referee to as a dry joint if it is in a solder joint.

This is correct, if your starter solenoid (trim relay) is fried it won't make any noise or go down at all. I just replaced one 2 days ago because my motor wouldn't trim up. Low on fluid would be my guess.

I had a very small piece of the filler cap that had somehow came off and got into the main cylinder blocking the proper fluid flow. After I took it apart was able to remove that piece, put it back together and it worked fine. Ya never know.
