Posts: 42 Location: Sheldon, IA | Have a question for you jig fishermen out there. I would like to get my wife more interested in musky fishing. She casts for awhile but gets tired from throwing bucktails or jerkbaits. I thought I would get her some jigs but have no idea what to start her on. I mostly fish deep clear lakes (Cass Lake, Spirit, Okoboji) any advice on jigs or any other lures easy for her to throw would be helpfull. Thanks. Musky Wishin

Posts: 32922 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I wouldn't have her fish a jig as that can be very frustrating fishing for someone who isn't really tuned in to the outfit. Have her toss a surface bait that is a straight retrieve, like a Mouldy's topper Stopper. A Buzz bait would also be a good choice. When a muskie erupts on one of these, she will keep casting!

Posts: 346 | How about some smaller cranks that will keeps the pike on her lure with the good chance at some good musky; Rapala Super Shad Rap, Cotton Cordell, smaller cranes, etc. MJB

Posts: 1536 Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | I would second Steve's choice of a topwater. Hawg Wobblers, Tally Wackers, Topper Stoppers. Any of these that are straight retrieve lures are easy to cast and easy to retrieve correctly. The action being in the lure. The person fishing these lures has to give them very little, if any added action. Edited by muskyone 5/5/2003 7:03 AM

Location: Milwaukee | I'm on board with the last post. Turn her on to top water stuff. Le Lure's creeper is my wife favorite. Easy to fish and draws action. The secret to a happy marriage might be sharing a boat.....

Some good lures with little resistance are: Bulldawgs, Tripple D's (As far as a deep crankbait goes, very little resistance), Zalt Zams, and the Power Probe (straight retrieve glider). I'm sure there are more. Pretty much any blade topwater (topraider, buzzbait, pacemaker) has no resistance as well.

I like small Reef hawgs(go figure), bootails, topraider, pacemakers, skunktails, and crane baits. I also like the 8" bobbie now. Monica

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | I would get some small slammers, or a lip ripper. Has alot of action with very little movement. Zalt makes a small version and the zam is unbelievable for a small bait.

Posts: 42 Location: Sheldon, IA | Thanks for all the posts. I'll try some of the lures you mentioned, gives me an excuse to buy more lures. Even though they would be for the wife. Thanks again and good luck this season.

Posts: 802 | rizzo wizz's are great baits for beginners since they cast like a bullet, retrieve easy, and catch all species including ski's. always get action on wizz's! steve

Posts: 532 Location: Chicago, IL | I think a Crane Bait is the best thing to start someone out on. Just tell them to pull on it then reel it in, get a smaller crane and they will catch fish all day (i.e. bass, northern, and an occasional eye). Plus it will usually not get stuck in the weeds like a bucktail if you let it sit after it hits the water -Phil

Some very good answers here no doubt, but you might try an alternate route! Mothers Day fast approaches, and this would be a perfect opportunity to test the stamina and dedication of your relationship. Buy her a Wishmaster as a gift, then take her out fishing later that day; teach her how to cast and have her speed crank the bait. Offer her encouragement and water often, and an occasional snack. Give her a 10 minute break every hour or so, and rub her shoulders/neck as she strains mightily against the pull of the gigantuous plug. My guess she will find a new inner strength, and that will draw the 2 of you even closer by days end. I am a firm supporter of the "Little Train That Could" theory, and will dare say that your wife will become one w/ the entire scenario very soon! On the way home that night, slip in the Helen Ready soundtrack "I Am Woman"; a dime to a dollar says she'll never be the same...
