I've had a 24 volt system for my electric motor for 5 years now, and love it. I bought an on board 2 bank charger yesterday, and was wondering how to do this. Do I need to unhook the wire connecting the negative on one battery to the positive on the other every time I charge?(my batteries are in series). Please advise.

I had the same question last year when I bought my onboard charger. The general consensus was to disconnect the wire that connects the two batteries. I do it every time, and it only takes a couple of seconds more. Although, I admit that it would be nice to back the boat in, and just plug it in.

Jason,

It depends on the charger. Most of the better chargers have isolated banks, so it is not necessary to remove the jumper between the batteries. I have a Guest 3 bank, and just connected each set of wires to the respective battery. Works great. Park the boat in the garage, lift the covers, and plug it in. Ready to go for the next trip!

I would recommend using a Marinco 12/24 system plug. They aren't alot of money, and set the system at 12 or 24 by the plug that one uses. Red is 12, black is 24. Then, no matter what, one needs not mess with any jumpers, and can 'regulate' what one wants for voltage. Plus, I carry a plain old gbattery charger with me, in case there is a problem with my onboard charger. I have the 12 volt plug on that , and simply plug it in to charge.

Shep, I have a mariner pro 12 that says it will deliver amps to the other battery if one doesn't need them all. Does this mean the banks are not isolated?

Sworral, you confused the h@## out of me. Do you mean the plug for the trolling motor? What do I change to a 24 volt plug to eliminate the jumper?? I'm still a greenhorn with this garbage(I'd rather fish).

I just have the jumper disconnected right now and it is charging!!!

How are those new Trojan batteries?

Also another battery question. I run an Ozark(identical to a Tuffy esox mag), and have 2, 31 size batteries in it right now. I'd like to maybe drop down to the 27's for less weight. Do you guys get away with 2, 27 size batteries? I really usually only need one full day on a charge.

The Marinco system is the plug and the receptacle, male and female. The wiring comes in from the batteries, and the 24 volt is acquired by the plug contacting the correct wires, as is the 12. Eliminates the jumper wire entirely, and allows for 12 volt access to the battery bank, too.
