| I run a 200 optimax and am getting ready to change out lower unit gear lube, my question is does brand matter? There are big price differences and I bought mystik from bass pro but saw quick silver for twice the price. I haven't found a bad review for mystic but I just wanted to make sure that it doesn't really matter. |

Location: Hayward, WI | Why mess around when you only have to change the gearlube once a season? It will cost you less than $15 a year to change it using Mercury gearlube. |

So long as the gear oil meets the specification requirements of the motor itself, the warranty will not be void.
The big thing is getting a good gear lube you trust. I don't buy brand specific oil for my motor as I like to go full synthetic. So...for my personal preference I go with Amsoil. It has done very well for me for many years now, is fully synthetic so it stays a little more viscous in colder temps than conventional. Not much more expensive than conventional but not as expensive as brand specific.
I would say find out what the manufacture requires for gear oil specification and then go from there....

| If your squirming over the price difference of $10 once a year, well then I bet the price of a replacement lower unit during the middle of a fishing trip would be really bad. If it isn't broke don't fix it. for a minor increase in price stick with a brand to brand or "amsoil" a brand that many people use and is very trust worthy. |

| Thanks for the feedback. The price doesn't bother me. I just baught the mystic stuff and then researched it and saw some of the different products and they were a bit more. I just wasn't sure if I should take it back or go ahead and use mystik |

Location: Money, PA | "Cutting corners" does NOT = buying an alternative to the manufacturers spec....why? Because its all about marketing! NAPA will sell you ALL the grease, oils, fluids you need specifically made for your engines at a lower cost and possibly better quality. AND quite possibly made by the same production line... And NO, the manufacturer will not void your warranty for not using the specific brand they want you to use; its about the specific recommended rating of the product....exe: FC-W in marine 4 stroke engines like my Hondas.

Location: Hayward, WI | The manufacture can't void your standard warranty due to not using their product. But some of the extended or promotional warranties can be conditional and require you to show that you have used the manufacture's products. So if you buy a motor that has a standard 3 year warranty and they where offering an additional 2 years of coverage, you may have to prove you where using the correct OEM products if you have and issue in years 4 or 5. |

Location: Lake Elmo, MN | Law prohibits voiding warranty just for using something different unless it clearly is a defective product. If it's a compatible lube but just a different brand....he'll be OK. |
